Cars by definition are purpose built...?

They're a cracking alternative to the typical 911 gt3 ring tool, and a lovely thing - I adore the idea of an adjustable tc - that's proper cool. I know I sound like a right moaner but I do wish it came in manual - a car so focused on the pleasure of driving fast should be available with a manual in my opinion!

EDIT - sorry thought you were talking about the AMG GTR. the normal one doesn't do much for me. The R however

Really :? you drive a ZMC & like the £150k 585bhp AMG GT-R but the "normal" £100k 462bhp version doesn't do much for you  yeah right  wouldn't the 680bhp black edition be more engaging :driving:

It’s a great looking car, and now at ‘affordable dream car’ status.

I suspect values will drop below £60k over the coming years.

They are possibly one of the best looking coupes around & the V8 twin turbo  dream car for sure but " affordable" :? not for me but i understand the term & they have held firm now at over £60k for quite some time so guess that can't hold forever

If I recall correctly we've already exchanged views in relation to the relative merits of 'driving around in a circle' on a track. I therefore don't expect you to understand my viewpoint, which is fine! For the record the black doesn't interest me either. The R is the one that's been engineered to drive properly. The rest have been engineered to be seen in. Sorry but it doesn't do it for me

Not sure what it is about Mercedes, but they do make the best looking coupes, it is a shame BMW didn't expand the Z range with a new Z8 or Z9

Would you pick the AMG GT over the SLS?

I think I would have to go SLS!

But if money were no object:
SLR Stirling Moss!

Driven a few of the SLSs (6.2 ones) - quite a car, very lonh bonnet and very wide, positive steering compared to other mercs. Goes & sounds awesome.

Great responses!
I've listened to several full speed run ups. The 7 speed dual clutch transmission is doing an amazing job of precisely slamming gears every 1 second or so on the 0-60 mph under 4 seconds. Not sure (at all) if I could come close to matching that with a stick and pedal job... but, yeh, I love to shift  :D

I see 4 year old GT and GTS dropping into the 60's occasionally and 70s frequently with 30K miles on them here in the US which looks attainable..... I do like the manual steering vs electric and the BIG motor. Of course. I think the dam thing is gorgeous and sounds thrilling... Curious why I'm seeing a number of cheap lemon law buy-back cars for sale though. In the Us a dealer buy back after unreasonable failures, repairs, etc, must be marked on the title. So what exactly is going wrong with these beauties!? :(

I think the only thing I'd be engaging would be the kerb and every speed bump with the front spoiler on a daily basis.
Would still like to be in a position to do that though. :)

I see your train of thought.

I’ve driven an SLS Black in anger (on a track) and it was an immensely capable vehicle. I would think the AMG GT R would be incrementally better given their respective performance figures, ring lap times, etc.
Accepting the demise of the manual, I suspect there are few two seat coupes that would be comparable on road and track.

Got to drive a GTR, GTS and a GTC a few years back with work, only up and down the road though. See them all around Stuttgart and because of work, I'm completely bored of them. Can't say the same about the 911's, would much rather have one of those although the Black Series is an awesome looking car but at 350k euros, a bit excessive. The last in the GT range so they're going balls to the wall.
