I own a z coupe, I'm in a dilemma regarding it. I have a love/hate thing with it. I've seen a lovely z4 roadster I like but I've now seen an Slk 280 3.0. I'm not knowledgeable on these cars, has anyone else owned one and used day to day.

You'll not get much love for them on here but I prefer them to z4s , I think they are a real world better drive , z4 is better around a track . Most people dismiss them as old women's cars and that's their loss , good car that drives very well without the need to start changing things . Folding hardtop means it's a great all rounder , manual box is better than anyone says , auto is also good .
There is an engine problem on some v6 engines only in a certain batch of motors , slk world will have the details on which engine numbers were affected .
Go and drive one , you may be surprised . I always have preferred them over z4s , I've owned both a couple of times so It's an honest opinion rather than a blinkered guess

I drove an SLK350 on track years ago, it was quick, not all that sonerous and felt more like a capable saloon than a sports type car. It was manual and no real issues with it.

I've never driven one or even sat in one, but I like the design and wouldn't rule out the 350 - on paper at least it matches the Z4 3.0si.

On Paper!

There's an episode of Wheeler Dealers where Ed China works on an SLK Kompressor and explains how it all works. Like a turbo but not a turbo and not like a turbo.

Servicing costs?
Running costs?

From Auto Express...
The 3.0-litre V6 unit plugs the gap between the entry-level SLK 200 Kompressor and the SLK 350. With 231bhp and 300Nm of torque, it propels the car from 0-60mph in only 6.2 seconds. And while the engine doesn't sound as meaty as rivals' - including Nissan's 350Z Roadster and BMW's Z4 3.0 - it's well mannered nevertheless.

All I'd say is don't bother looking at SLK's if you are taller than 6ft and value leg room, head room, arm room or space in general.

My dad has an SLK 200 (2005) and I never feel comfortable in the thing. It drives really well but it is just far too cramped! The passenger footwell is crazy shallow and the dashboard way too intrusive on what little leg room you're left with.

Also got to agree with Jamie.. It looks incredibly bland unless you go AMG!

Thanks for the honesty. The one I mentioned has the amg kit on apparently. But it's the day to day living with it that I think about. I'm just under 6ft so I may fit, but other than another z, but in roadster form, there is nothing else out there that I like. My coupe is awesome to look at but as mentioned above, it's a love hate thing going on. Somedays I love it and other days I hate it. Soooooooo confused atm.

I test drove both SLK and Z4 and Audi TT before i purchased my Z4.

I must say it was difficult to choose between the SLK and Z4, dismissed the Audi just didn't like it.

The cost to purchase was very similar between the two, the models i was interested in drove in a similar manner. The SLK had more boot space but that was not a deal breaker for me as a roadster is not supposed to be that practical. I was buying this as a third car so i could live with it when i needed to.

The dealers were both very good ( Williams Bolton and Marshalls Bolton) so nothing to split them there. They were both giving good discounts with nothing really to split them apart there.

At the end of the day there was something I just liked more about the Z4.

I guess the only way to decided is set your budget, drive them both and make your mind up. At the end of the day you will enjoy the car either way so go on enjoy choosing.

Absolutely agree with Carl69. I test drove all three as well. It's a head/heart thing. And when it comes to sports cars, the heart should always win out. :driving:
IMHO I found Audi boring, and it's ugly anyway. I only drove it because my previous car was an A4 Cabriolet which I loved.
The SLK was a bit uninspiring I found. I only drove the 2.0, but the interiors as similar i think, and I thought a bit tacky. Not a fan of White dials with black numbers.
My heart was set on the Z4, and it was the only one that brought a (very big) smile to my face.
