Merc SLK? Girlie car?

Dunno, but the noise, oh the noise! They sound so evil. I found the interior quite plasticky, which surprised me considering the price of them new.

I'm seriously thinking about the SLK55 AMG as a contender for my next car.

5.4 V8
360 bhp
Fast
The noise :)

Shame there's only 360bhp under the bonnet and not 500bhp like the old 5.5 V8.

Not keen on the non AMG versions.

but we have corners in scotland Adam

377lbs-ft of torque. Quicker than a Z4M, at least it is in a straight line. It's a serious contender.

A 5.4 V8 with only 360 BHP - apart from the noise (which is indeed ace), I'm struggling to see the point :? Why is the engine so big ?

I *think* it was detuned to stop polar bears dying

The SLK55 AMG is rubbish. Dim-witted auto slush box as standard. What were they thinking?

EDIT: And no ESP off function either. On an AMG.

something like this Adam

they are rare though

I was looking at 06-10 models. You can get AMG with 30-50k on the clock for equivalent price of a Z4MC of same age

Didn't know that ESP couldn't be switched off. That's a shame

I looked and drove an SLK55 AMG before buying the Z4M Roadster a few weeks ago.

The car I was looking at was a 2009 model and was around £20K.

My observations were:

I was not really taken in by the styling, even on the AMG model and in black - that generation of SLK shape is quite feminine to my eye. The newer 2010 on shape is much better I think.

The interior feel and quality was pretty ropey in a fair few places.

The standard fit slushmatic 7G gearbox was both frustrating and disappointing. My mate had a C55 AMG which had the 5 speed gearbox and this was much much better. In auto mode the 7G could not really make up it's mind to what gear it wanted and slushed about. In manual mode it seemed slow and dim witted.

It did not feel like a drivers car, more of an all rounder and cruiser. The gearbox I found a particular annoyance.

It is possible to disable the ESP system but you will also lose the ABS at the same time if you do this.

I really like the MK1 SLK. I think they look classy, understated and elegant. Saw a beauty with 80.000k miles, full service history ,1998 for 2.5k. Seriously tempting for some top down driving.
As for the new one, it's not girly, it's more like drag queen if you know what I mean. It makes you look twice but then you realise it's not the genuine article.
It all looks a bit too try hard and contrived.

Thanks. On the strength of that review the AMG is off my list unless someone convinces me otherwise.

Thats a clever thing to do - what meeting decided that.

I was surprised how few popped up on pistonheads - I have a work mate who has an old gen SLK and is looking for a year old SLK AMG and he loves them but does big miles in his scotland to south of france regularly.

Personally i like the way they look and to be honest its a more modern shape than E85/E86. Notice i didn' t say more beautiful just like its from a more recent generation.

Adamski- where is the what next thread ? i think we will have hours of debate getting the right sportscar sorted for you by next spring :driving:

You cannot disable it by pressing or holding down the ESP button as you can in BMW's with DSC.

To actually switch the system off you have to go into some hidden diagnostic menu where you basically switch off all the stability and ABS pump based systems.

Stupid I know, it seems MB really didn't want the customers to be able to switch any of the driver aids off, even if they took the car they spent their hard earned on to a track.

Red seat belts are good against black leather interior , my 911 has them and was very please it had the option :D suits the red exterior
