Seemingly it can happen when it's very hot outside and is due to the build-up of heat causing excessive temperatures inside the afterthought tin roofed car. This build up of heat melts the steering wheel.
The steering wheel design and more heat absorbant insulation was changed for the E89. Surprisingly this worked on the E89 even though the majority of women who buy them don't put the roof down.
The original E85 Roadster design which the Hatchback is based on wasn't affected.
