Another mid week poll- I've based this on the Autocar top 5 - their order is as follows

1.Golf R
2. Audi RS3
3. Mercedes Benz A45 AMG
4. BMW M135i
5. Subaru WRX STI

Don't ask me how the Scooby makes it when it's not a hatch :o ask Autocar

the fiesta ST isn't in the mega hatch category but literally kills most things in the reviews i read, the latest top gear it managed a 3rd position against 28 of the best out their and beat some of the most serious contenders, for its price point ( still expensive I'm aware) compared to the others its a giant slayer, i LOVE mine, best car I've owned in a very very very long time.

The Golf R is the mega hatch of the moment and quite simply, on a back road/real world is a super car slayer.

Wouldn't you not class the following as mega hatches : Megane RS, Leon sub8, civic type R.
All these go round the ring about the same or faster than a Cayman GTS, so surely that are mega/hyper hatches.

Could be right but this is Autocars list - I'm a bit surprised the Scooby is on there it's not even a hatch.

Purely on this list I've voted M135i because it's a) RWD b) straight six engined c) impressive value-for-money. The Golf would be a close second. The rest on the list? Wouldn't get a look in.

Exactly, those are the 'hatches of the moment'

Very interesting is that the megane RS (and cupra 280 too) is about twice as cheap as the subaru where I live (netherlands), but is probably considerably faster on a track
And that's what a hot hatch is all about. A fast practical car for a resonable price.

I would have voted for the M135i, however it's so ugly that it makes the Fiat Multipla look positively handsome, so Golf R for me

Golf R for me as well, looks stunning.

The 1 series - I just can't get over the terrible looks and would never have one.

Re..I just voted RS3 because I like the slightly weirded out R8-giving-birth ad for it.

It's the RS3 for me: 4.3 sec to 62, 362 bhp 2.5 litres. Always liked Audi's - had an A4 s-line for a couple of years; wonderful car.

I like the RS3 very much and almost went for an A3 3.2 V6 Quattro instead of the Z, the Audi was the "sensible" choice as it had 5 seats and is a lot more practical than the Z4 but in the end I started planning a driving holiday so went for the roadster instead. Point being before owning the Z I would have definitely voted for the S3 but after owning a fast BMW for a couple of months the only one on that list that really interests me is the 1 series

Tough choice between the golf r and the 135 (especially the facelift so much nicer imo) but i think the 6 cyl would win out.

Audi A3s are possibly the most boring looking cars on the planet. Even with that engine the car just doesn't appeal to me. They have barely changed in the looks department in 10 years.

Audi is more prestigious than the Golf and possibly the quickest out of the bunch

BMW probably has the best exhaust note but the 1 series isn't good looking in my eyes

I have the Golf R and had a company m135i for a few months a while before that. Of the list posted I'd probably chose the A45 simply because i've not had it. The gearbox on that is a sticking point for me though.

Of the unofficial list posted here (megane, Typre r, cupra 280 sub8 etc) i'd go for the Cupra. If the Cupra had been available at the price of the Golf R i'd probably have taken it instead.

Most of these cars get criticised for being jack of all trades master of none. There's no doubt about how efficient they are though. A box will make them ridiculously fast but even as standard the figures often don't tell the full story. A couple of Cupra owners over on the R forum posted some vids from a little unofficial rolling start drag day they attended one of the cars was standard bar a downpipe, the other was running a £300 plug in tuning box.

The e46 result astounded me and i asked if there was something wrong with the car or the driver. Apparently the results were repeated and a similar result achieved against a Z4MC

I guess not unsurprising voting on here but I'm afraid I just find the looks of the 1 series out of proportion - like a larger car compressed into a smaller shape and I appreciate that's true of other models too - though I am an Audi fan (my dd is an S4 avant, modded to 480psi) I agree the A3 is no looker either so Golf R gets my vote too though recent EVO test is equally interesting where the Seat Sub8 fairs very well along with Megane.

Love those youtube vids of the Seat embarrassing everything !

Always thought it interesting how car makers use tv ads to communicate their corporate personalities and how that might attach itself to a potential buyer. Creatively I'm definitely an Audi/BMW man I'm afraid.
