Yep, this. I dropped them off, a cup of tea and much Z4 talk and I was off to my overnight stop.
We then met the day after for these photos.
I've got this annoying supercharger type whine from the front, most noticable under engine braking at low speeds, probably because in this situation the exhaust is quiet. I suspected it was there all the time, not just under engine braking.
This noise was apparent on my test drive 18months ago, I initially thought this was a collapsed oil filter as the car it was overdue a filter change and the filter did look a little squashed.
After changing the filter very soon after purchase the noise had reduced but thinking back, this was probably placebo.
After my 400mile drive a few weeks back I thought it was time to start digging deeper as the noise was still bugging me.
I took it to my mechanic early this morning for some diagnosis. He was surprised how loud it was and commented it was louder than what he was expecting to hear from my explanation.! Oh. :rofl:
He came out for a road test, we performed loads of situational tests, but he wasn't convinced the cause until he got the stethoscope out. At 3k RPM the alternator is making a loud high pitched whine. Nice! Diagnosed!
So, I'll get an alternator on order and he will swap it over for me in a few weeks.

New alternator installed, no difference.
I'm honestly starting think this noise is absolutely normal, 2 people have now told me their N52 sounds the same, I've found numerous videos online from people trying to identify other noises and I can hear that faint whine in the background then they rev the N52 up to 3k rpm and then decelerate.
The stethescope does indeed amplify a whine sound (as designed)
That combined with with me wrongly comparing the noise to my previous 2 N52 130i's (with probably MUCH more sound deadening than the Z4) sent me down a wrong path thinking there was a problem, when there is not.

Today Bruno from BDS delivered my intake kit.
Intake elbow, closed ITG airbox with foam cone filter.
There was a slight mix up with their stock count, my allocation had been lent to ITG for some development so wasn't 'in stock'. Once they got it back, Bruno drove it over.
We chatted all things Z4/N52/S54 while I started to install it. Bruno must have been twitching watching me fumble around with a stubborn jubilee clip so he took over and it was installed in no time.
I previously removed half of the cabin side foam from the sound generator. That gave me a nice compromise but was still a little too boomy above 5k RPM for my tastes.
The BDS solution gives a nice bark from 2.5k RPM and it amplifies nicely as revs rise. Enough to compensate for the sound generator removal.
It compliments the Eisenmann exhaust really nicely.
Performance? I very much doubt any performance increase can be noticed from the seat. #MarginalGainz
Overall I'm pleased with the result.

Looks nice and the bark sound is appealing from lower rpm.
I’ve always been cautious around air filters and avoid foam filters after hearing about deteriorating foam getting into the engine.
Be interested to know how you get on with it.

I take looks good and BDS certainly went above and beyond after their stick take bo-bo.
I’m still really tempted by one, but want to sort my corroded wings out first because as much as the boom over 5k annoys me, catching sight of the slight bubbles on the arches annoys me more!
The new wheels look fab, especially with the six pits behind them. I like the yellow fogs; it works well with the colour of your car.
