Having just bought a Z4 3.0ltr which is quite high milage (93k) it seems to me that a comphrensive mechanical warrenty for the first year might just be a good idea!!

Does anyone have any recommendations/warnings about suppliers? Thought I would consider BMW Fiancial Serrvice, Warrenty Wise Warrenty Direct etc??

Open to adise and guidance please

Thanks in advance

Norman

BMW warranty is the best if you can get it, and from experience only pennies more than Warranty Direct.

TBH though on a pre facelift (I'm assuming) I wouldn't worry as very little goes wrong apart from coil packs, springs etc which cost less than the annual warranty premium.

I too bought a high mileage 3.0 zed (92k) and took up a 12 month RAC mechanical warranty to avoid any costly bills.
First thing that went wrong though was a leaking coolant expansion tank. Was it covered? No.

Next thing I'm going to check is the parking sensor system, one or more of the sensors are faulty, so would like to repair under the warranty.
Haven't checked yet because I think I know what the answer will be.
Doesn't seem worth the money unless something major happens to the oily bits.

Have been looking at warranties myself at the moment in preparation for buying a coupe. I take it that to avail of a BMW Warranty the car has to have a full BMW history. I have seen a few cars I would be interested in but they have been serviced at independents after the BMW Warranty expired.

If I was going to the likes of warranty direct I would want the Franchised dealer cover and their prices for that seem to be considerably higher than the independent garage cover.

If it is the independent garage cover, is it a garage nominated by them or can you specify the garage you want it taken to?

Check with BMW direct, not a dealer but IIRC yes you can cover it with BMW, no claim in first month but all future servicing has to be done by BMW.

Warranty direct wanted to do a pre warranty inspection on my car before covering, but I have decided to put the 70 per month in the bank instead.

That's interesting to know, must give them a call. I would be getting the car serviced by BMW in future, it's not the engine I'm wary of but it's the SMG gearbox if anything was to go wrong I assume they are like any other and it's a straight replacement box and mega £££

The higher the mileage, the higher the cost and the lesser the cover available in the wear & tear categories.

If your engine/gearbox goes at 100k miles then you're likely to only get a 'contribution' towards the costs - and with the stipulation that the work is carried out at the BMW dealer. So you have to weigh up whether it's worth spending twice the price by getting it done at a dealer and then getting 30% contribution, or getting an independent specialist to do it at half the price with no contribution from BMW.

Is that with the BMW warranty or the like of Warranty Direct?

I can't comment on the aftermarket one as I've not had one, but reading through WD/BMW terms & conditions, it looks like they all do this to some extent - although I'm sure it's only with the BMW one that you'd be forced you to use a BMW dealer anyway.

This would have been covered under the BMW Comprehensive warranty, expansion tank yes, coolant hoses No. The BMW warranty is quite comprehensive but is only available up to 100k according to the terms and conditions.

They have also informed me that I would have to get the car serviced by a BMW dealer from the date I take out the warranty but previous to that it is ok if it has been serviced to BMW recommendations using Genuine BMW parts.

I was nearly sure there had been some sort of EU ruling about the "Have to get all servicing done at a BMW Dealership" wording and that in fact if you did continue to have it serviced with genuine BMW parts and at the correct intervals they could not refuse a claim. Looking for this on tinternet but haven't had any luck yet finding it.

Very little goes wrong with these cars (pre facelift). Someone on here had an example with 230k miles ++. I've seen E46 3 series with 240k+ miles, and a good few of them, which indicates good reliability.

I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a warranty you may never use. IMO better to save the cash for the odd repair you might need to make.

It's all personal preference though. I could probably take the hit to replace a gearbox etc if I had to. But if you need peace of mind, a warranty could be right for you...

The car I'm looking at is an auto so I couldn't really take the hit to replace that gearbox and the HVA issues would mean a replacement head eventually from what I've read on here so would rather have the peace of mind for those reasons.

Fair call mate - just hope with the mileage you would get fully covered...

That's the Op's car that has 93k on it. The one I'm considering is 34k so that shouldn't be an issue.

having struggled to get work done durring the warranty period, i would be very dubious about getting work done with extended warranty - by BMW or anyone else
