Me and my Z4 journey

With the car back on the road, it was time for a new roadtrip.

G_6170.thumb.jpeg.832b698eaeb9c77452ad3828c3e7388f.jpg

Not the Bond ferry this time.

G_6183.thumb.jpeg.a3c09fa71d0ed6a7a4165f3a323c7637.jpg

After a nights sleep.

G_6195.thumb.jpeg.572b89be02cb1a502650e6996cc32e5f.jpg

...we put the roof down

G_6213.thumb.jpeg.bb0a2e0ca10b4435f822b3b7469b8edd.jpg

And blast thru Denmark (although, I put the roof up quite quickly, as it was really cold)

G_6216.thumb.jpeg.28ecb610f60bc8bd195fa85b035c7baa.jpg

Had a stop at My garage in Denmark. A kinda dealer/museum/workshop place.

G_6250.thumb.jpeg.e65106e78a673579f2fa7829c60a2e80.jpg

G_6258.thumb.jpeg.3bc686fc8c1f8eb43c77738be3c8e861.jpg

G_6289.thumb.jpeg.233d50d8d05e5cfeaaf8ff256ed99693.jpg

G_6299.thumb.jpeg.0e3227ca197c4a7b6f2fc2ec63ebce84.jpg

G_6280.thumb.jpeg.427c84e040eeda9962ff1934686e7ea0.jpg

G_6268.thumb.jpeg.474205bea9d0e1e32a5350f40b584906.jpg

...and after a while we entered Deutchland yet again.

G_6324.thumb.jpeg.f656e20edf234a63f6b18933f8db16bb.jpg

A quick turn to the right, and we enter yet another country, Holland.

G_6468.thumb.jpeg.4ac76f4014079a9765e18ccdfd28e268.jpg

Great weather and empty roads. It's a shame that the speed limits are just stupid.

G_6483.thumb.jpeg.84c70ecff903649ac431e66ed706fdb8.jpg

G_6495.thumb.jpeg.47b2620fdf33e82c17496b57d33c6a7d.jpg

Entering Afsluitdijk. I've been here before, but it's quite special to drive here, as you don't see the end of the road.

G_6524.thumb.jpeg.a93097c6fea08af887d8682f5f07e467.jpg

G_6531.thumb.jpeg.161506da1f59293f284a9c263f4850a5.jpg

G_6631.thumb.jpeg.8d6de51a604810202b4de1682c8207f4.jpg

G_6644.thumb.jpeg.839efbf6f15e8828bd3384e55b56f64e.jpg

Then we encountered rain, and it was not much else to down than find a hotel for the night.

G_6664.thumb.jpeg.8d5b16f6e9fff0ba7b56b62c2493848c.jpg

Obviously a maritime themed hotel. :D

G_6677.thumb.jpeg.b0db16f949bbc3b890af49a979b1bd7b.jpg

Not the greatest weather next day either, but the journey continues.

G_6686.thumb.jpeg.d8cd98d661972a000ec278432f9c8d2b.jpg

...and we enter Belgium!

G_6712.thumb.jpeg.2fba7d1ff0a8b66356152b4b82af914e.jpg

A really nerdy stop, the ruins of an old car factory with a roof test rack! Like the Fiat factory in Italy, just way smaller.

G_6736.thumb.jpeg.ac43e1d3afa7b5f54e31a53940fe3d2c.jpg

The cars produces here where called Impéria, and the factory closed down in the fifties.

G_6739.thumb.jpeg.89c6360b0504096f798f598200fdd260.jpg

Further down the road, we found yet another factory.

G_6751.thumb.jpeg.0eeba8fe0af329a1fe6ed8abe1b6c919.jpg

...but we weren't here to look at old factories, this was our goal for the day.

G_6767.thumb.jpeg.dbe6bbfbf94efa10234b2f46c3247d0e.jpg

G_6821.thumb.jpeg.1ae0e768a4864e3a13ee5279f4a8452c.jpg

Unfortunately no driving on Spa for me, but it was fun to see and be there. After wards I had a quick detour into Luxembourg to buy something for my eldest daughter.

...and of course filled the thank while visiting. :)

G_6843.thumb.jpeg.61d5f5fb55f71e1ddc7d27aad858511d.jpg

...before entering the last stop of the day, and same place as I Was last time; The Nürburgring.

G_6855.thumb.jpeg.a32077384634f0bdc07d8a07ff50be9e.jpg

G_6884.thumb.jpeg.d5566a5ec7af03ee87cd362460a2ee91.jpg

Visited the now abandoned Südshleife.

G_6090.thumb.jpeg.59745d64b2449f669cfd7dac91331440.jpg

...and some mandatory photos.

G_6129.thumb.jpeg.3488a39d15673be54689131776dd8731.jpg

G_6177.thumb.jpeg.04b608a6d3fe0b0c461842bc40b0906d.jpg

G_7125.thumb.jpeg.1e76565e1344bf17ccd2ed7762fe83d2.jpg

Found a sibling. :)

G_6978.thumb.jpeg.85d16ae0a4c8df870dd4c5d265c7c8c1.jpg

...and went for a few laps.

IMG_7352.jpeg.0ea553d445f9f72429518146493e4662.jpg

IMG_7100.jpeg.31b4a36cbd090eff4092692eceffe5b2.jpg

A fun couple of days, but times flies, and eventually I was back home. This time with all my emblems still on. :)

G_7259.thumb.jpeg.1aa541aa2c72deceec5e10b6ec959628.jpg

Then we entering the summer, and not much happening to the car. Had a few small road trips around the fjords and attended some car meets.

G_8203.thumb.jpeg.1541df628fa758b1c1ca88d4cf2744ed.jpg

G_8214.thumb.jpeg.f2da575ac4639b285c83871beb31a76c.jpg

27 hairpin turns to get down here. :)

G_8220.thumb.jpeg.65744ad8f10dc39feef5a845577301f3.jpg

G_8251.thumb.jpeg.5a913be93a9dcb8a0f094d43436e18af.jpg

G_1092.thumb.jpeg.e27c92f9b807276a033e7d917ad3e4bb.jpg

G_1109.thumb.jpeg.1ab47b3ddce5c90d31bb54f9efd90b86.jpg

...and eventually the car was parked for the winter yet again.

G_3552.thumb.jpeg.8e817cb67dec33a65beec656a142c7f9.jpg

Before parking it for the winter, the roof failed on me the third time. I quickly found what wire that was broken, but I couldn't locate where it actually was damaged.

G_1477.thumb.jpeg.1e3d9340ae2d400ccee3049f61b31f85.jpg

To be able to run the roof and diagnostic further, I had to just make a new cable outside of the car to the sensor.

G_1493.thumb.jpeg.0f2e678ca88990f97a96c4bdc82944ff.jpg

G_1495.thumb.jpeg.2d5a17393ba6bd31d5adc0ac83bd60ae.jpg

The car sat over christmas, and when it was time to start dismantling stuff.

G_1484.thumb.jpeg.4aa00e24d5382fa72575ecc1c9251edf.jpg

Removed the rear roof panel.

G_6507.thumb.jpeg.0c05f142aa4af3c55c9fa34f28c421b2.jpg

G_6509.thumb.jpeg.cb487f8763c777a0b5527fc9146480e7.jpg

New cables. I'm changing all cables to the rear panel. I went for .25mm LiFY wires, as it seems like these are quite flexible.

G_4476.thumb.jpeg.8ad6fb682b7a0fa1b4d05df892bff80a.jpg

I also twist two and two wires together, so each wire is replaced by two new one, to have some kind of redundancy if it breaks again. Also twisted wires are less likely to break than non twisted.

G_6515.thumb.jpeg.7731ec0f82d97231693f07f892db5ed4.jpg

This was a pain to do.

G_6603.thumb.jpeg.e3fda629059d129705e951e67412f8bc.jpg

The passenger side had been repaired before (before I bought the car), and it wasn't the most impressive work.

G_6651.thumb.jpeg.3682b1942a8d57ac8757b0172ddc7ed5.jpg

For each "step", I reconnect the new wires sith the old ones to see that everything functions like it should.

G_6683.thumb.jpeg.8221d40b9757e550509b17cc6d94871a.jpg

Bought OEM zip ties. Most expensive zip ties ever, but I try to make it as OEM as possible.

G_6733.thumb.jpeg.f008e0cc1eef94a0f3d7eb08f4c02157.jpg

...and sort of done.

G_6773.thumb.jpeg.0cbe30c1c22a5b3f60bfb19b3cb73a89.jpg

This was also a nice opportunity to clean the rear window. :)

G_6798.thumb.jpeg.e88acddbac979770a75f5d7e87a22afc.jpg

Made sure that the correct shims is placed where they should.

G_6800.thumb.jpeg.ad4ef71358721de3199139684d4211e9.jpg

And back on with the panel.

G_6801.thumb.jpeg.394d3d1d4a04a224c14b54210cff5e77.jpg

Spent some time adjusting it, but it went quite well.

G_6803.thumb.jpeg.9f5056b658c49b955db5657b627f620c.jpg

New OEM bolts.

G_6806.thumb.jpeg.935ab2a20e9a81c6776b2e7a6b426732.jpg

...with the correct force.

G_6807.thumb.jpeg.f0a445ba1d4cb71692f4bb698a72269b.jpg

And all done.

G_6810.thumb.jpeg.d80b56c55066f647686b43ff283c8a8e.jpg

And now we're at real time, so my posting well be way less frequently from now on. Thanks. :)

That was quite a marathon with your roof but it should now work properly for many more years.

Now that E89s are getting older I imagine other owners will be encountering similar problems so it might help some out if you posted your fix in the "How To" section of the forum.

Great maintenance, helpful.
I gave it a makeover by pasting red synthetic leather on black leather

Hi.

Here's an attempt to make a thread about my Z4 and my journey with it.
Enjoyed reading that - some great photos and a good mixture of DIY repairs & mods with some road trips using the car as intended
