Mazda RX8

We had an RX-8 from new for 3 years. Frankly, it was rubbish. Constant manufacturer recalls, high oil consumption, rotten alloys, massive fuel consumption, electrical gremlins, no 'go' due to lack of torque. It was rusty as buggery underneath at 2 years and 8k miles. We also had a 3 year old 50k mile E46 320Cd at the same time. Easily as quick, better to drive, cheaper to run, much better condition mechanically etc etc. We sold the 'bullet proof' Mazda for 30% of what we paid new, and regretted owning it ever sincae. What an error. The Roadster S smashes it into the bushes in all respects....just should never have bought that Mazda.

I just traded an 05 Rx-8 for my Z4 and I can say I'm glad to be done with that nightmare. At 66k miles it was on it's 3rd engine and I was lucky to get 12-14 mpgs city and barely 18 highway. I had a 91 Rx-7 that lasted me to 200k miles and I know how to maintain a rotary engine but Mazda really screwed Rotary enthusiasts with the 04-08. I lost a lot of money on that vehicle and I will never purchase another Mazda in my life. The only positive is it lead me to find my Z4 which is an 03 that has only 54k miles on it and is in perfect condition. The car feels faster even tho the Mazda was supposedly 1 second faster in a 0-60.I get almost twice the gas mileage with my Z4 because to maintain the defective renesis rotary engine that was in the rx-8 meant revving the hell out of it to burn off carbon. I think I'm Bmw for life now.

Glad I'm not the only one with rose-tinted glasses on for the RX-8!
Luckily, we'd owned BMW's previous to the RX, and bought our E46 Coupe whilst we owned it. The comparisons were night and day quality-wise. As a plus for us now, the Alpina Roadster S is quicker than the RX-8 by some distance, better built, and does almost DOUBLE the mpg at 33mpg mixed. Pays for the higher insurance, I guess

My friends old RX7 did 12mpg, but it had uprated turbo etc etc.

I'm currently in a RX-8. I have had the car for four years now, and have not had one problem with it. It does drink gas, but tracks really nice and handles great. With that being said, I'm looking forward to trading her in for a Z4 or a Boxster, which are my two choices at the moment.
