Maximum wheel offset

Hi chaps

Seen some wheels i like the look of but they only come in one size. Basically they will stick out 19mm further out than they do now (both are 18") but the rolling radius will only be increased by about 1%. I dont think they will rub the arches as there seems to be 19mm clearance at the top, i am more concerned about it looking rubbish (or worse still being illegal) by protruding too far out at the sides.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

More details are required to provide ans answer, what width are the wheels for example.

Also you mention 19mm of clearance but don't forget wheels go up and down as well so that 19mm can soon by -19 mm

UK Construction and Use Regulations for motor vehicles define the legal constructiuon requirements for cars and other vehicles. Effectively for a car when viewed from above or directly from behind or from the front and where the 'steering' wheels are straight (normally the front set) then the tyre itself should be completely covered by the vehicle mudguard or fender. The tyre may be exposed during turning when the tyre will extend beyond the bodywork. Now there will be some leeway and minor protrusion will generally not attract the law BUT get involved in a serious accident and watch the lawyers have fun if they can in any way suggest your vehicle was not fit for purpose and comply with the relevant motor vehicle regulations.

Hi,
I have fitted new 19" CSL reps which "stick out" 13 mm further than the standard wheel/tyre combination supplied by BMW.
This, IMO gives as near to perfect look to the car as possible, as the standard BMW set up always looked a little too set back for me.

I think you could probably go a couple of mm's more but you don't want it looking like a cartoon car.

Hope this helps.

They have the wheel offsets like that so you can fit snow chains :)

Got to love the CSL's

Another thing to remember if the offset is to far from the origonal it can affect the handling of the car

I must admit these are not for my car, the way finances are going i should be in a Z4M by the end of next year and already plotting the wheels i want for it :D

These are the ones i had in mind from the current M3:

m3.jpg

Front alloy wheels: 18x8.5" ET29
Wheel part number: BMW 36102283750

Rear alloy wheels: 18x9.5" ET23
Wheel part number: BMW 36102283751

Fitted straight on they will stick out 19mm further at the front and 13mm at the back.

Alternatively i could fit replicas (albeit with spacers for the ///M) which look like this:

I don't know where you got your figures from but by my calculations if you put those wheels on a standard Z4 the fronts will protrude 24mm and the rears 40mm over stock wheels.
Perhaps I misunderstood your post?

These would be for a Z4M which has different offsets, 42F and 30R from the figures i have, could still be wrong though.

They look spot on, do you reckon the fronts could get away with another 6mm? Do you have any issues with rubbing?

Many thanks

My fronts rub on et38 and 8.5" rims, with 235 Tyres though. So will get 225 or 215 next time. Supprised though

You probably could get another 6mm but not sure if it would look a bit cartoon style.

There is a fine line between just right and just wrong!

No rubbing on mine what so ever, no matter how hard I try....

Cheers.

Is yours lowered? As its on a gradient so a bit hard to judge. Does look a decent height though :)

Chris, where exactly do the tyres rub?
There are quite a few members with 8.5'' rims with 235 tyres on a 35 offset with no problems. I'm surprised 3mm would make that much difference :o

Yeah dont forget mine is lowered too though. And on the arch liner, so well clear of the arch itself. Im sure it only rubs on the drivers side as well though. Bit weird but will whip the wheel off just to make sure the offset is correct on the back of the wheel. It on just touches and thats at speed over some nice corners :D

Yeah im not light  Well 6ft and 100kg, well maybe a bit of wedding weight too, and not trained in a week

Yeah, mine lowered too on Eibach's.
