Mattress Recommendation

It goes against the grain to spend a fortune on a matress when you see them advertised from £100 upwards, however, I think you'd struggle to find any other item you posess that you use regularly for 8 hours evey day. Therefore, it makes sense to spend a decent amount.

We all have £x,000 cars that we use for a couple of hours on a sunny Sunday, but are reluctant to spend decent money on a matress !! Mad but true !

Thats exactly true, I guess all depends how an individual classes comfort etc in a bed, some would be happy to sleep on the floor wheres others want something that they hope will support the body correctly etc and give maximum comfort. I always think its a little tricky with beds/matresses and would hope the more you spend equals increased comfort.

Tempur mattress for us. Just got back from holiday and both of us have stiff backs despite the bed being perfectly OK, just not Tempur.

Get the best that you can afford, there are some sellers that give you a 30 day exchange if you can't get on with your chosen mattress, I think Bensons Beds do this deal.

My partner has a water bed and I find it so comfortable when I stop at hers. Some distant half relation supply them in Telford so she had a good deal but I'd definately buy one

Thanks ever so much everyone much appreciated. Decided to go for a Vispring via John Lewis, only downer it's upto 5 week delivery, still will give us a little time to save for it lol.

I'm another one for waterbeds, had mine for 11 years now and wouldn't have anything else. They don't slosh about like you see in 70's tv and films as they have baffles in them. You can firm them up by adding a couple of gallons of water if needed, the best thing of all is you never get into a cold bed.

i totally agree to the fact that you need an excellent mattress to sleep to avoid any kind of health issues. I too used to have a lot of back issues back then, so I finally made a purchase of this mattress that is basically meant for kids, but we can use it as well! You can check this one out - [removed]

Having recently replaced ours, and gone through the same process, I was shocked at the price of some of these "wonder mattresses"

I was getting backache of a morning, and the old mattress was bought when we moved into this house, 11 years ago.

I had a look on Which? As I'm a member, and one popped out as being not only very good, but also VERY reasonably priced. Our bed is a super-king, so nothing is cheap in that size, don't get me started on the cost of the bedding..

The Ikea Morgedal rated very highly, and starts @ £159, but not available in anything above kingsize





Next decent rated one, that was available in super king was the Silentnight 3 Zone Memory Foam

Anyway, I ordered the mattress online from http://www.mattressonline.co.uk/Product/Silentnight-Memory-3-Zone-Mattress-P1162 which was the cheapest I could find it, and it arrived the next day.

I have to say, after sleeping on it for 4 months, we both love it. The bed has been transformed, and neither myself of the Wife have any back pain of a morning now..

I never went for the Vispring in the end We ended up going for a Slumberland Paradise 3000 pocket sprung with memory foam again from Mattress online who were doing a good deal on them with 700 quid off, pleased with it up to now. We looked at a Eve Mattress but couldn't get past paying hundreds for basically a slab of foam.

£700 off???? How much was it originally?

It was 1900 quid before sale price, expensive but we thought well its not everyday you buy a mattress and for me I didn't mind paying a little more if it means it lasts well.

Our last mattress lasted about 25 years and apart from the stains and cockroaches was still quite comfortable.

I always thought Tempur was memory foam, purely based on my pillows. Agree on non memory foam, tried one before & found them far too hot during the night.

Ours is due for replacement soon, allegedly due to the what seems to be newly marketed 8yr swap - guess they want to drive frequency of purchase somehow. If I work on 3 nights a month away, and then 4 weeks holiday away, then their 'slept in' vs owned for 8 years gives me another 1.5 years left....I'm such a geek!

Interested as to what you end up buying & your thoughts

Thanks Matt, I think you are correct on the Tempur looking by their website, I didn't realise this, good job I checked now. I think the Vispring are supposed to last upto 25 years and are handmade to a large extent. I just wandered anyone who has one can recommend them.

Most half decent non-foam mattresses are hand made just the way a pocket sprung mattress goes together is easier to do (well) by hand than by machine... Got a mate who works for a mattress factory and he told me there are only 3 (or maybe 4 I can't remember) factories that actually make the pocket springs for mattress so there's really not a lot of difference between brands if you compare like for like spec. Really just the quality of additional fillings

I paid about £250 (king) for mine and it apart from the different cover it's almost identical to the one my soon to be father in law paid £450 for in a double just because he wouldn't listen to me and wanted a brand name....

Best thing for anyone to do is go to one of the massive bed warehouse places and lay on a load of them, tell the salesman to piss off before they start talking because generally they are clueless and get in your head and that's the last thing you want looking at a mattress just work out what is comfy for you through laying on them

Trust me, I used to "demo" aka sell Kirby cleaners back in 88-89, one of the best tactics we used to clinch the sale was going upstairs and vacuuming their mattress THROUGH the sheet, with a small black cloth attached instead of the normal cleaners bag.

We would then go back downstairs and talk about dust mites and dead skin cells, and how they wouldn't want them in their home etc, and after getting agreement/commitment, we would pull the cloth from the Kirby and open it out on the floor in front of them.. The results were always dramatic..

Seeing a PILE of dead skin flakes, visibly crawling with dust mites (I kid you not) was a powerful closing tool. I actually had a couple of women run out of the room to throw up, but not before ordering their husband's to "get it bought"

In fact, I remember one woman insisting that she would buy my demo kit from me there and then, at full retail of £899, as long as I left it with them so they could vacuum the mattress, as she wouldn't sleep on it until it had been done.. I was more than happy to oblige, as we'd normally discount the demo kit to around £450 and still take it away for a polish and clean before returning to deliver it.

Strange how some things stick in your mind, I still even remember her name and address, nearly 30 years later, prob due to the fact that I made around £400 commission from that sale alone at aged 17/18
