Massive thank you to Dietcokeman

I feel that this needed another post instead of just a comment in my other thread.

I just wanted to say a massive thank you to Bryan (Dietcokeman), he helped me save my roof motor and relocate it today. Not only did he save me a ton of money (which is always nice) and wouldn't even accept the offer of buying his favourite tipple! But it was also just a good day with another genuine nice car guy learning new car stuff. A big shout out to his partner for keeping us fed and watered throughout the day too! Sadly we didn't take photos of the relocation, but I would definitely recommend getting it done.

He definitely knew what he was doing and I'm so glad I didn't undertake the job on my own! The roof works better than it ever has, and we even sorted out a few other jobs that needed doing. So yeah a massive thanks to a genuinely nice guy and I'll give you shout if I ever sell the mv3's

Hi gents , hey it's always good to help people, especially other like minded people.

Although I'd never done a relocation before I have changed a couple of roof motors before so was aware of what was involved if we couldn't actually just relocate the motor . As it was the motor was not working so it had to be removed either way .

Getting the motor casing with enclosed motor to come way from its mounting point was the hardest bit, with both myself and James ( the OP) trying various methods of releasing it in such a confined space it isn't easy . As it was we managed to seperate the motor casing in situ , remove the top part , take the motor out after undoing all the pipe work and electrical connections etc and this then gave us more room to get the bottom casing free( it's cable tied to the roof frame) after that was done it was fairly plain sailing . We revived the motor, cleaned out the drain holes and drain pans , cleaned up the connectors for the electrics and positioned the motor in the boot recess . You have to loosen the shelf mounting bracket to pass the pipe work under it so it doesn't foul on the shelf and make a small cut in the drainage pan to recess the pipe work but it's all fairly obvious and looks neat when complete .

The roof lock down bracket was not in its correct position so it was catching on the rear screen when folding up and down , well after alittle head scratching we figured out where the mountings where and move it back to the correct position so the roof was issue free .

Someone had split nail varnish or similar onto the seat base at some point and it had permanently marked the leather . Luckily I had some leather dying stuff so I stripped back the leather and recoated to the correct finish for James whilst we where doing the roof and his seats now look a lot better .

A few silly things like a loose number plate light where also attended too whilst we where doing the roof and I believe the whole day left us both with a sense of satisfaction and we both learnt from the experience , and bonus ..... Even though I planned for a rain soaked day, it didn't rain and we keep dry  .

And double bonus for James he can now enjoy his car roof down in this summer sunshine we have today . :D

All in all a great day with another forum member .

Thanks for putting up the full details of what we did Bryan, I was a bit tired when thinking what to write last night  Was so happy to put the roof down last night and on the way to work this morning. Bring on the rest of summer! (I probably just jinxed all of us there, my bad). Was awesome to learn about the roof in more detail and doesn't seem as daunting after doing it with someone now  Definitly have a big sense of achievement, the car just needs a very deep clean after seeing your immaculate example :D Thanks again mate

Thanks for the quick response! I'm located in London.

Any suggestions about users I can contact for help would be appreciated! My roof motor was submerged in water for a while and is now all rusty. I have some pictures but trying to figure how to upload onto this forum.

** I must add, I have a BMW Z4 E89!

I think bowser134 is your closest member but most of the work you read about on here is for the e85. You never know though!

Any ideas anyone who is closest to me for motor relocation I am in Barnsley South Yorkshire? My roof works fine but I know it will not be like that forever, especially as the car is now 16 years old .

Hi I haven't got anything to add I'm afraid as I haven't been around for a while. Just wanted to say it's a mad coincidence this has popped up again as I got another Z4 just over a week ago after after over 2 years without one! I will post some pics soon.

I hope you manage to get your roof motor sorted soon
