Recently been taking a liking to a Maserati 3200 coupe, I don't know anything about these except its a fancy for the moment. Any one know anything about these
are they quality or trouble?

I took a long hard look at buying a Spider before I bought the MR. The cabin still has me falling in love every time I catch a glimps.

The buying costs were about the same, at the time. The running cost are not the same.

The engine, in the spider, shares it's basics with the Ferari 360 modena.
it's a semi auto manual clutch. Like in the M6 only italian. The exhaust was cheaper than the one on the MR. About £2200, as I recall, 4 years ago.

The engine, in the 3200, is the turbo, take a test drive. There's old school lag and s##t loads of torque. If your serious then the 4200, is a better more reliable car, in my book. Just does n't have the die for boomerang lights.

can decond that they sound awesom but a girl at circuit training had one and had a lot of trouble with it, she swapped it for a db 9!!!

I was wondering about cost of parts! In the add it says it has skyhook suspension, what on earth is that? Fuel cost is a concern because i use
my car at the moment as often as i want but with a=that one at 17 mpg it would limit my use. Its a fabulous looking car though inside and out.
No intention of making a quick decision but soooo tempted.

A friend had one from new (a 4200 I think). when he went to sell it every buyer asked what the clutch % wear was.

Evidently you can read off the clutch wear and its about £5k to replace!

FYI his wife always got 21mpg. my mate got 17 :)

That said a fantastic car with a gorgeous sound but potentially nightmare bills!!

Skyhook is Masers version of ajustable dampers. Got mixed reviews of early cars as I recall, sorted by the 4200 and spyder.

Trick with a car like the 3200 might be to keep 5k aside, for the day it goes wrong. Then fix it and sell it on, or fix it and pop another 5k away for the next one. That was certainly what I had in my head when I was thinking og buying the Spyder.

Day to day simply double what your Zed is costing and that should be ball park.

Would still love one myself, but the above logic has kept me away. A friend I see regularly at PH meets, has a lovely 4200 for weekends and it's been ok on reliability as far as I know.

All above advice and info has been much appreciated. One thing i cant and wouldn't want to do is have a 5K float just in case, that would take the enjoyment out of it.

A car dealer mate of mine bought one in years ago , gave the guy 8k for it , he found main dealer invoices in the last 12 months history for 20 k , he sold it on for just less than 9k , good luck but it's a leap of faith . The example I'm giving was quite a while ago and they are worth similar money now but maybe there's a few more specialists to choose from now .
That said , there's a guy drives past my house in one now and again and it sounds great , maybe buy it and get out after a few months , you'll always be able to say you had one :D

Not in place of the Alpina, Brian ? Dont do it !
Otherwise, You'll could be putting me and my piggy bank in a very difficult position !

In my head you just need some form of insurance/get out plan with a car like that. Learnt the hard way, with a much cheaper Fiat Coupe that I had for 9 years. Eventualy gave it to my mechanic, rather thab pay for another engine rebuild. The alternative is, it breaks and spends six months sat in the garage whilst you save up to get it sorted and that''s no fun at all in my book. Do'nt think you could get an afordable waranty, worth having, on one of these, unless it was realy low miles. But have not tried that hard to find one, so could be wrong on that.

Interesting thread here though this is for the newer models, but gives you some idea of waranty costs.

There's a Wheeler Dealers episode on you tube with a Maser 3200. Check it out,it's very interesting!

I briefly (and when i say briefly I mean roughly for about 1 hour) thought about one of these.

I read a quote from someone that owned one and that sealed it for me. It read
"you can buy a good or a bad version of any car. Apart from a Maserati, they are ALL unreliable"

I think my mind is made up. :D Will hang onto my Alpina and keep it safe ready for Number5
Sounds like these are for lottery winners.

small local company did some detailing work for me on a 4x4 when i was chatting to them they mentioned they had been working on a 3200 - they said the interior easily came off in their hands as they were trying to clean it.
