You can get a wire brush that goes in a drill chuck

Good for cleaning them up, no need to remove them

The best way would be soda/sand blasted and powdercoated :) It means it gets ALL the rust/dust off and the finish has a solid base to attach itself - this is especially important if you have old callipers as the pad seats within the carrier can gum up causing the pad to mis-align and reduce braking efficiency.

If you have access to a sand blaster great, sadly I don't have one in my garage so it is just the wire brush treatment for me

You can send them off :) I don't have the kit either. It also gives a good chance to refurb the callipers on their return (new seals etc) :)

True, I don't disagree it would be the "propper job" so to speak

But that turns a quick cheap mod which essentially would take a Sunday afternoon to brighten up the appearance to taking 3 or 4 days and costing more than £5 tin of paint

Are your discs ok? Looks pretty scored to me and are they cracks?

Paint looks good otherwise!!

Taking another look as I only focussed on the calipers, I agree with you. They look badly scored, lipped and show evidence of radial cracks (although they could be impressions left by pads held on, while very hot).

I'd want those swapping out.
 
That looks like pad deposits - usually left if you keep your foot on the brake after stopping from speed. Gentle braking from speed will remove them.

On another note, as CJ10 said above, there is a bit of a lip there, would be ideal time to change disks and pads :)
 
About to paint my calipers too (in red) whilst changing disks and pads, pictures to follow next week.

i never noticed them before... just went out and checked them and they look fine.

I think the picture had markings from when i rotated the disks by hand which has the rusted edge flake on disc face.

My inspection 1 last year had the disks and pads as green... Under 25k miles in the car... So thought the disks should be good for 40k+ unless i have been hooning around too much:opps:

How easy is it to whip the calipers off?

I no I missed a little bit round the back when I was painting mine as it is awkward to get around with a brush. And need to paint one more so might as well do it while ive got the car jacked.

Not too hard.

If you don't remove the brake hose you won't need to bleed so leave them hanging

Yup two bolts

They will probably have rubber or plastic covers over them

7mm allen key is your friend :)

and don't tighten the bolts when you intend to loosen them - you'll feel like an idiot when you realise what you're doing! :oops:
