Mapping...is it worth it?

Hi,

I'm thinking about getting my Z mapped. I'm wondering if it is worth it given that I believe it works best on diesels given the fact mapping gives you more torque than anything else.

Also, is there anything to be aware of? Do I need to upgrade any other parts to handle the extra power?

I had my old 120D mapped and a few months after the clutch totally went and I figured it was because of the mapping and not upgrading other parts.

If anyone has had it done have you noticed better fuel efficiency?

Cheers.

Biggest gains are on turbos, however after much debate and research I decided it was worth re-mapping my 3.0si - thread below (all ten pages!)
You will find opinions divided, and lots recommending the more expensive bespoke remaps.
The gains are noticeable on the 3.0si but not big enough to require upgrading other components to handle the power

Nice one Marlon - I'll give this thread a read when I've got a spare hour or two. ;)

Are you glad you did it? Has fuel efficiency improved?

I'm very pleased with the way it changed the car - I'm used to it now, but if you read my post halfway down page 4 of that mammoth thread I explain how I felt immediately following the remap - and after a few weeks more feedback halfway down page 6.
As for fuel economy, in hindsight I'm not sure how much difference it made if any.

I am due to get my 2.5 remapped at Castle Performance (Portishead near Bristol).

Nigel at Castle has already mapped my Mercedes E250 diesel and I'm very pleased with the end result although he has pointed out the gains wont be anywhere as high on the Z4 and in all likelihood see no more than 18bhp in increase.

The plan is to get the engine mapped so the power delivery is more linear across the rev range (rather than only being accessible at high revs) and to increase the torque.

As for economy, my understanding is if you want more power then you have to throw more coal on the fire :fuelfire: ... so you gotta be realistic and ultimately accept its going to cost more in fuel

Regarding fuel economy - my mpg is averaging the same as it did prior to the remap, it's definitely not affected my mpg negatively :driving:

I think that's correct only if you're using the extra performance, if you're just cruising/commuting as per normal then the economy should be affected negatively. (It may even be slightly improved )
