manually opening a z4 soft top

im looking to buy a 2005 bmw z4 3.0L. from a dealer.
the price is good but the convertible does not open .
when i press the button to open it it unlaches from the winshield but does not move.
the red light for the switch flashes red.
he offered me a $300 discount to sell as is.
i would just like to manually open and close the top to make sure there is no frame damage.
as far as ive read it is most likely the motor for the convertible , which i can replace myself during spring .

so.. how can i manually open and close the roof ?????

To replace a roof motor here in the uk can cost up to £1200 at a dealer or around £700 or so at an Indi- this would include the labour charge - the motor itself is £300+ - a discount of $300 Is no way a good deal . There is a few hours work doing it yourself and that is if you know what you're doing !

You can open it yourself - tells you how in the handbook - but is a PITA to have to keep doing this :(

Personally I would offer the dealer the asking price ( if you're happy with the price ) provided he sorts the problem out properly before the sale.

Good luck

Personally I'd walk away and find one where the hood Does open - must be some more out there. :driving:

i dont have the handbook, i dont have the car.
the price is actuall about $800 less than other sellers with simmilar miles.and he is offering a
$300 discount on top of that.
i can do the work myself and i have a friend that can help. if i cant do it , my mechanic will charge me about $250 to replace the motor
i just need to find out if the drop top frame is not bent or broken.
that is why i would like to manually open the drop top.

as far as ive researched .... i need to pull a lever and tilt it 90 degrees , then press a button that is located between the seats , then the i can freely move the drop top ????
is this correct ????

Check the shelf in the boot is not in the up position as this will stop the roof opening.

Here is a kink that explains how to manually operate the hood -hope it helps

Bought z4 with a non working top (was cheap). Replaced pump myself and had it working for a few months then broke again. Need new hinge and that's $500 so I now have manual top. I workout so manual top is whatever...
