Manual or Auto

Spot on Rusky :thumbsup: to be fair the manual is dead & I don't blame my other half for going twin clutch as she does over 30k miles a year & even I wouldn't fancy a manual if I was doing that mileage, different transmissions suit different needs. :)
 
See, the weird thing is, whist I love the comfort, convenience and flexibility of my auto box - especially if I start commuting a lot again - I will discard it in a moment and not look back if/when I get an ///M :?

Iv got the e89 with manual and it's not the slickest of gear changes especially if your working it through 1st 2nd and 3rd on a good run (any e89'ers got any tips from 1st to 2nd, theres a big jolt unless you release the cluch steadily, kind of slows things down?).

I appreciate manual is more rewarding but the BMW manual is like waiting to get a compliment of the mother in law! 8 speed sports auto is the way forward if you can get hold of it.

You can spend more time driving rather than fretting over gears and the flappy paddles are an absolute joy to use in manual mode.
 
Why - because I lack consistency, am easily led and often talk complete bollocks ? :lol:
 
Well........I thought the question might provoke a few different opinions :evil: Thanks folks, for all your comments, speaking for myself, I've been driving an Audi coupe auto for the last few years & love it. The only conclusion i can come to in the search for my first Z is I guess no conclusion :P ........Can i do that :rofl:
 
My 2 cts,
I like the manual more. It really does add to the driver experience and has more corner adjustability than with the auto box. Not just lifting off(I don't like free wheeling coasters, it's like hitting grass flying off track), but also when applying the throttle. The autobox is just slow. For long journeys and comfy cruising, yes slushbox no doubt, I wouldn't want a manual gearbox in my 5 series, and I wouldn't want auto in my Z4 and Mini CS. Truth is the mini became my commuter instead of the 5 series though :-)

+1 exactly my situation. The new autos are very good though.
 
I'm wishing I'd paid extra for the Auto! Manuals are great fun and engaging in a good drive, but not this one (e89) I'm affraid :(

Have a drive of a Z4M then you will realise your gearbox isn't so bad after all! I have never understood beemers gearboxes how they differ so much, the manual in my old 520d was as sweet as a nut & the manual in my Z4M was terrible & the manual in my M3 is somewhere inbetween.

I must be committed to the manual because it seems Beemer are more successful with the autobox.
