Manual or Auto

Ok at the risk of starting a riot & i'm sure it's been debated many times before is there any real difference in performance between the manual or auto gearbox & is it really all down to personal preference ?

Simple really. If you enjoy driving a sports car get a manual. If you are either lazy or an incompetent driver get an auto  :P :poke:

You should try them both & decide for yourself , i have driven performance autos for years but got caught up in the "you aren't connected without a clutch" a while back when buying a 911/ 996 . After a couple of weeks i realised all the talk was utter 5hit & the car was gone within 2 months
Never again , for me the manual is something to be tolerated in my work vehicle , the auto i enjoy driving in our other vehicle

You said that twice................? Its the traffic light/intersections that make an auto compulsory

I like the auto cos I am lazy, but the auto will change gear faster than most people can with the manuals

Really? How quick does your auto go from 6th to 2nd?

We used to have one of each and I would say its personal preference. I found I used the sport button more in the auto if I was overtaking on a country road, but then I didn't use the paddles much.

Can't say I ever found the auto slow to react when hooning - in fact I liked the fact I had both hands on the steering wheel at all times. Conversely I haven't found the manual a problem to commute in.

Basically I love driving a Z - especially with a load of other Z's - it just makes me happy.

Definitely personal preference, I love the absolute control of the manual in the Z when I'm out for a blast (and the noise of blipping the throttle on a down change :D ) but my daily commute is an auto, my left leg gets enough exercise without constant pedal pumping in a traffic jam!

As quickly as you could do it given you'd have to decelerate significantly to do so as well. We'd just be clicking the paddles and braking whilst you brake and wait to change / engage the clutch.

There's no performance difference between auto and manual in my experience. Been on loads of runs in my auto and nobody has said I am too slow or have trouble keeping up. It's a personal choice, sometimes driven by whether you will be using the car as a daily driver / commuter or not - I got an auto because, a) it is my daily driver, b) my wife only has an auto licence, c) the auto box is excellent and very smooth, responsive when required, and d) I can drive it 'almost' like a manual with the stick or paddles when pressing on.

I would actually say the auto is quicker in real life... Despite the stats, unless you are lewis hamilton!

Probably - thanks to the pretty flat torque curve of the engine, redlining it (as the auto box will do) doesn't really hit a drop off point in power delivery. But real world, two good-ish drivers ? Really, really difficult to see any difference except due to reaction time.

As we have mentioned Mr Hamilton, I think you will find that his office is an automatic with paddle shift :D I don't think his has a gear stick :o and I don't think he has problems going from 6th to 2nd in his auto  so I think we can safely say that no one on here can justify one over the other on a performance basis 8) but what I can say with certainty is that both auto and manual can give you as involved a drive as each other :poke: therefore as the wise old owls have said, it's all down to personal preference :driving:  :D

We have both the M3 is manual & the TT is a twin clutch with paddles...I love the manual & I hate the twin clutch that's all you need to know! :driving:

Seriously though its personal preference you either like one or the other there isn't an inbetween.

Ahh I have the auto in my zed and had a manual Audi. Love my auto but wasn't happy about the manual box in the audi :poke:   :P

See there isn't a compromise you love Autos & hate manuals complete opposite to me! :)

I don't think there is a middle ground, Autos/twin clutches bore me to tears but its great that we all like different things, the bottom line is buy the one you enjoy the most & you can't go wrong.

Some years ago the Swedish police carried out extensive research into this question. At the end they reported their findings that it took "a driver of exceptional ability in a manual gearbox vehicle to better a driver of average ability in an car with an auto box".

Don't know if I agree but that's what they said!

Leez I have had manuals all my driving career but I do like my auto and would def have another. :D thing is, it also depends on how you use the auto box. Just put it in D and away you go :| I agree none involving and quite boring to drive. But use the gears, paddle or stick and it's very involving and fun :driving:  But it's not to everyone's taste and I agree with you that a personal decision needs to be made on what it is the driver wants from their car.

I don't think there is any doubt that a auto/twin clutch is quicker in everyway but a manual is far more rewarding even if ultimately slower & less effective...but like in life the more you put in the more you get out & I love the old fashioned way of cog swapping & flicking a paddle is for the playstation generation & more people prefer the modern way nowadays.
