Just curious....looking at new 991's....do you think it's wise to buy a manual Porsche these days? Just curious...as I see some people do, and wonder whether they manage to sell them on ok....

I think Ferarri have stopped doing a manual box now (correct me if I'm wrong)

I wonder whether buying a Ferarri, Lambo etc in manual is just something you wouldn't do anymore...

That depends on the model Nick. No PDK was available for the GT3/GT3RS. Will be interesting to see what happens with the 991 version.

Ok specialist models excluded. GT3's etc etc...

I'm of the thinking that even on a Ferarri 360, Gallardo etc, I'd prefer the auto option, even if they are automated manuals...

I love my DCT, and just don't think I'd want a manual 35i....

I'd think it suicide to buy any standard Merc, BMW (3 series, C class etc etc) in manual option....

Agreed - certain marques (Merc/Jag/Ferrari etc) you need an auto box to protect residuals.

I don't think it's as important on BMW's....yet. Are non-DCT M3's/Zeds depreciating faster than their auto equivalents?

Def wouldn't buy a manual M3......Z's, I don't think it matters.....even the E89's....

I'm the opposite,I'd only buy a manual. I really dislike auto's of any kind.Sports cars should be manual IMO, part of the appeal to a driver is the skill to drive the thing. The only 911 i'd want is one with 3 pedals and a proper gearbox, If they didn't make one, I'd buy elsewhere. I know big lumpy exec saloons and 4x4's will all be auto, but sports needs a manual. If most of your driving is city/urban, then an auto is the way to go. I live out in the sticks so don't need one. But, that's just my own opinion, thats why car makers usually give a choice.

Manual for me, my friend as a 911 GTS which is auto, he had a 997S manual beforehand, said he wished the GTS was manual too.

Although Dct / flappy paddles do intrigue me :?

Well only ever bought an Auto once an Audi A4 Convertible, bag of nails sold it 2 weeks later never again

Autos, or automated manuals have come a long way, but I would still prefer a proper manual.

I think on the SLK when you choose AMG trim, you get the auto by default, and have to then choose manual if you desire.

PDK (auto) for me and for my next cars :driving:

Manual - I decide when I change gear / double clutch / blip! Drove a manual db9 a while back and enjoyed it. The surprising thing is, if you look for a DB9 they are all autos!

I know your at your richest when you are about 60 but what a waste! :headbang:

The PDK on Porsche is a very good gearbox - I've just come out of a 997 Turbo with it on and very accomlished and quicker than the manual in Turbo guise.

The vast majority of 997 Turbo Cabs were bought in Tip/PDK and I think this is the way Porsche will go - just not sure on the GT2/3....yet.

I thought about getting a manual Z4 but the one that looked best value to me was auto and seems fine so far, although I'm only 3 days in

I get bored though. Love my manual. The pdk equivalent box on the Abarth is fine but I get bored after a bit. The auto on the x5 is a must though.

I think Its a case of technology vs tradition. I was pro manual until i got behind the wheel of a car fitted with a sports auto box, and fully understood how they worked. I still love manuals btw. :D
Having the best of both worlds was a big plus, with the addition of paddles for manual shifting. Also the fact that in terms of performance modern auto boxes are just as good as a manual, and in some cases better. Its just a matter of personal preference. :)
