Manual gearbox

Really are crap, bit of cold weather, struggle to shove it over to reverse, then at first lights, have to push it back and forth to get into first.
BMW Getrag box really should be a lot better, worst box only just behind the Rover box on my TR7.

Getting to the stage i might buy second box and fit it. Been like it ever since i bought 9 years ago.
Really spoils the fun driving the car. Good mind to fit some stick on heaters to warm the box.

Have you tried changing the gearbox oil? Others have reported improvements.

Mine have been better after fresh fluid, and my recent E46 3 Series was also improved when I got the nylon bush at the bottom of the gear lever replaced.

But the Getrrag gearboxes do seem a bit hit and miss going by the 7 I've had that ranged from fine to my current one which is really obstructive.

The ZF gearbox in my MC is probably a bit better than any of them though!

Tried several, best so far has been Redline MT-LV.
I just feel the first owner abused the 1-2 gears.
Wonder if there is wear seeing as struggling to push over to select reverse.

So just ordered the gear bush, see if that makes a difference.

Guess I must be lucky with mine. Always been a sweet positive shifter. After months of lying idle in a cold garage, it took about a mile driving home through town and it was back to sweet. Pulled her out of our warm garage for a drive on the moors early Sunday morning and sweet slick changes from the off. :D

What version car, as i see the 18i and 20i have the same numbered gear box, but are physically different.

Another option is to pull the box and replace the syncros, there's seems plenty for sale, must be a known problem.
Problem is it's more expensive than a second hand box.

That's possibly because your MR will have a ZF box, not a Getrag one!

I think new syncros would be the better option. There's no guarantee a 2nd hand box would be any better than yours!

Done them in the past. I park next to a gearbox repairers. Could drop box and get them to do it.

At the moment i often double de-clutch 1-2 until it warms up or skip 1-3.

It may be a daft question but has your car still got a Clutch Delay Valve?

If it has I'd get that removed as it improved the 1st to 2nd change on my E46 3 Series and my 2nd E86.

Indeed. But folk are often moaning of the same issue with the ZF box especially 1st to 2nd. :)

BMW manual boxes really are shite.
I have an E90 and the changes especially from 1st to 2nd or into reverse are crap during winter until the car heats up.

I've been meaning to get the fluid replaced but something always crops up every winter. Last time it was a turbo replacement.
Currently at 63,000 miles on a 2006 plate.

On the E89, I just got a quote of €454 incl VAT for a transmission oil service (auto).
That one is on 57,000 miles on a 2010 plate.

Can't agree sorry. Nothing wrong with them IMO. I find it slick and positive, just like me.
