Manual gear levers

Just a quick question....

On most of the manual cars I have seen the gear lever is quite large and has a silver/chrome top to it. A few (non sports as I am looking at pre 2005 cars) have (what looks like) a shorter shifter in black. Were these manual short shifters an option, or likely to be aftermarket?

Examples.... long gear lever..

short gear lever.....

Is the first one unique to 3.0 litre cars and the second to 2.5s?

This is mine 2003 3.0 Sport Package

I had a feeling the one with silver on it was either sports package or 3.0... it's by the by though really, both of them are horrible... you want the even smaller (heavier) one with the silver neck to it :D

Edit: here you go...

You can get them with 5 or 6 gear, M and non-M top plates.

factory knob from my 2006 2.5si as per you first pic but now I have a ZHP knob which looks so much better

re edit thanks to sp3ctre :headbang:

yup, looks better... I have same in mine. One thing I notice though is they don't age too well... they get a little shiny after a while.

Yes mine was second hand but I keep thinking about getting a new one as my old Brand new 320cd Msport didnt go shiney even after two years.

I did not know you could change the gear knob and get access to a 6th gear that is otherwise hidden. That's brilliant. Does it need any dealer coding to work and should I change the whole knob or just the badge??

CJ just change the badge, thought a man of your talents would have know about this mod

One more thing to spend money on..........................................................................HELP! :D

Anyone tried the ZHP with a LeatherZ armrest?

"M" version gives extra BHP too... some idiots actually buy the original engine from the stealer, when as we know the gear knob is the root of the extra power!

fortunately no coding required... It's a straight swap. Instead of swapping it though you could just used a bit of TipEx and buy an M badge off ebay... the difference it makes is out of this world.

I love this forum - the advice is so useful.

Do you think the gearknob mod could be made to work on an auto? I'm thinking it might create an SMG effect.

off course and again you can use your existing one... just need a bit more TipEx to write all the gears that's all...

I had loads of TipEx left, so I moded my car to go faster... just had to changed the numbers in the speed cluster.

Next mod will be to increase the rev limit.

What has everyone been drinking at lunchtime today? :D

What a load of crap.

We all know the root of the extra power is in the Sport button - one press and off you go...............

It's just like the Turbo Boost Knightrider used to use.

Too much mileage on the treadmill then 2 cups of coffee. Should be back off the ceiling by mid afternoon...

Meanwhile - I'm not sure about the sport button - that just makes the car go around in a lower gear and the throttle jerky giving a perception of speed.

I've already ordered speedo converter decals off ebay and using the KPH should be able to stick them on the dial. 100mph will now show as a true 160. Where else can you get that performance for £2.99

I do hope OP is not upset when he reviews his thread

They will only blame the moderators. Oops ..

My gear knob has no numbers on it at all, I am actually impressed with my skills that I can find the gears without the writing on it though.
