Hello!
Id like to buy a 2004 z4 with a lot of miles 70k + (ideally 90k 100k ) I would like to know what potential costs will come my way as far as reparis/maintenance

I plan to keep this car for at least 5 years and plan to drive it year round trough chicago winter. I have a friend who owns a shop. so hopefully I can work on it myself or offset the costs with his labor. (I will not go to a bmw dealer unless i absolutely have to!)

I guess my main concern are electrical nightmares that can only be fixed by the dealer if lucky.

so I would like to know what repairs have you done in your z4 ?
what do you think I should be spending for repairs per year?

Thanks!
R

Welcome to the forum - how long is a piece of string..! Difficult to answer as it depends on how welll the vehicle you purchase has been maintained. Had my Zed 6 years from new and no significant problems apart from replacing the rear springs.

Mine has 85k and the only problems I have had are with the coolant system. It is supposed to go bad closer to 60k miles which was when I had my first issue so maybe that one has been fixed. All and all I compared to my E46 this thing has been solid and I even have the SMG option, which scares me everyday but has yet to do anything wrong. :)

My 03 Z4 is approaching 100k miles-- coolant recently starting leaking. I am at the service center getting that fixed now-- they also found I had a faulty temp sensor. Overall haven't had too many problems outside of regular maintenance items. Once in a blue moon they car revs up and down and will occasionally die once started. Service center thought it was the air flow meter, but since that has been replaced it has happened once again. That's the only "major" problem I have had that no one can seem to find a solution to. Very rarely occurs though-- once or twice a year. Also had the starter replaced not long ago...

High mileage...hmmm...my 03' got totaled after it hit 236K miles. So, I did have quite a few issues with it, though. Not to scare you, but it being a 1st year issue, build date 11/02, it had some glitches. Lets see, instrument cluster changes, fuel tank replaced, had to replace radiator and hoses at about 100K. Throttle body valve needed to be replaced twice. Blew Trans about 220K, recovered seats, new top, accident replaced drivers side, new this and that. Was at the point where it seemed to be going to my mechanic almost every month for something or the other.
Trying to keep it running was getting expensive at this point, but we still had a great time putting on all them miles. yes, I was the only owner.
So, what do I do? Oh FYI, my insurance gave me $13+K for it when they totaled it :D So I went out and bought a 2007 3.0i fully loaded, my 03 wasn't that loaded, both are steptronics. :driving:

In my experience, there were no massive differences between the low and high mileage cars I looked at and took a drive in..all had broken springs, many needed a new set of discs and pads all round, some seat bolsters were worn but none of these things were exclusive to high milers. My car has 96K on it and you would choose it over some low mileage cars, both in condition and the way it drives. You may have to replace some suspension bushes and a clutch but again this could be the case with a lower mileage car. Its all about who's owned the car before and how its been driven and cherished. Low mileage bangers are bad news and they are out there, so go for an older and wiser car that is fully run in and sorted! Good luck :D
