Mandatory speed limiters

Have you seen the announcement on the EU introduction of mandatory “speed limiters” on new models from 2022 ?

As I understand it you can go faster by “ consciously pressing the throttle” but how long will it be till this and all the other mandatory systems just kill the fun.

Glad I have my E85 Z4M as in 10 years time it will be soo different to “ modern cars”

I wonder how sportscar revenues will be affected as they take the fun out of motoring , is this why they are all developing SUV’s

:headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

It makes total sense in speed restricted areas, when I did my speed awareness course 90% of the people caught speeding in a 30, it's restricted to 30 for a reason in populated areas!
but to limit in a national speed limit area seems a bit pointless

Speed has never been the problem. It's the inability to stop that causes collisions, deaths and injuries and there is a difference. A well trained driver knows when to brake, how hard to brake and what distance to leave between vehicles and pedestrians. They can anticipate what is likely to happen in given situations. They will drive at 10 mph if that is required, or can safely travel at 110 mph.

 try telling the police that when you're speeding past a school

You are missing the point. If driving standards were higher, collisions would be reduced and drivers could be trusted not to collide with people, vehicles etc. ABS was introduced because untrained driver's did not know how to brake effectively. Speed limiters are an extension of that. Interesting that you mention speeding past a school. 15mph might be too fast in certain circumstances when passing a school and the Police would probably not charge a driver at that speed if he/she hit a child who ran out. 'No fault collision' rarely exists. In my mind if you hit something, you were going too fast, because you could not stop due to various reasons.

What are the Joy Riders (b....y car thiefs) going to do - perhaps they will get caught on camera as well as the uninsured/taxed drivers.

The cars speed ability's are not the problem, it is the idiot behind the wheel and that will never change!

There isn’t an real reason why not - I’m not saying that I like it but there isn’t a good logical reason against.
I think it was only a matter of time before it was introduced given the technology available today. HUD pings up speed limits so it must be a fairly simple next stop to link it to a limiter.

My 335 has a speed limiter button and I use that (when i remember) and the car seems to go numb - but if it saves a ticket..,?

There's no surprise in this new story...and it's very hard to argue against it, given how poor the driving standards are across the general population.

In my opinion, old school petrol cars like ours will be almost worthless by the time 2030 hits. It'll be an age of all-electric autodrive on motorways and restricted speeds on all other roads. Cars that don't comply will be banned. EU regulation will see to that.

I think that cars will always be collectable. Even now the expensive ones rarely turn a wheel. The chances of 71 drivers being together on a road increases the chances of a collision. Why don't we have 1 driver with 70 people riding with him/her. We could call it a bus or errr, a train. We could run them on tracks or rails, so that they don't have to steer. Better still have a driverless vehicle like Docklands Light Railway. That might work.

Jeezzzz, you're painting a picture of post-apocalyptic horror
Makes me appreciate these 'end of days' 6 cylinder petrol engines powering sports cars that can be driven with a certain amount of freedom - enjoy it while it lasts friends :driving:

Shame they gone down this route, I was hoping they would approve cars that give electric shocks to drivers who don't indicate and legalize machine guns bond style, to be used on lane hoggers!

I quite like the idea of GPS sensors restricting speed in built up 30/40 areas... you could never be caught speeding & if you ever were it wouldn’t be your fault..

Expect the Germans will fight any upper limit on their autobhans, though as a frequent user there when sh@t happens it normally ends in really big poo.

Given most countries have a 70-90 mph top limit, I can’t see how anyone can legally object to limiting road cars as Volvo will do to 112mph

Perhaps the boffins could include automatic engine cut out devices for people on the Mobile phones, drinking coffees, smoking etc. The list of possible causes for accidents is endless.
