As for the banfgle comment - I believe manufacturers do this stuff as a part of the lifetime evolution of a model. At launch they could do anything and even sell a passenger seat as an optional extra. Mid way through they can change a few things to freshen it up, just like clear lights. Then do a facelift 2/3 way through (bumper cover, rear lights, etc.) and finally in the run out start to throw in extras foc and special models. Of course there's more to it than that but if they didn't then the 'wow' soon fades on a model.
Not so sure about BMW but some manufacturers launcg ever whiter whites and redder reds as the model ages. That makes the new stand out even more.
