Making the leap?

I'm thinking of making the leap from E85 land.

I bought my E85 mainly for those top down drives thro Europe in the sun - We even bought two "tripp"suit cases which fit the boot space perfectly and are big enough for three weeks of clothes each (yes even hers)

My local dealer has a very decent E89 for sale and I'm tempted but I have doubts about the boot space in the top down mode - What are your views? Can you get a couple of cases in, what type and size etc.

Any advice apart from leave her at home would be appreciated!

I can get two cabin size cases in mine with the roof down. You'd be surprised at the room you still have.
Edited to say it would probably be even better if you used soft bags to 'fit' into shape. You'd get even more stuff in then rather than hard cases.

To be fair to my local dealer, he has said bring the cases around and try!
I'm fairly certain I will be able to get one of my existing cases in tho a second is very doubtful - That's probably the space my soft case will have to fit if I do make the change.

I suppose its the price to be paid for a tiptop - Progress?

You won't regret it if you do! Take him up on it, go and try your cases to put your mind at rest about the room. I was surprised when I had mine, I didn't think there would be as much as there is.

You could always sell your cases and buy some tailored for the E89.

"Roadster bag" type?
I admit that I have not looked to see if they exist for the E89 - I'm going to look now! :D

My cases will not be a show stopper.

Anyone tried to get full set of golf clubs and trolley in boot with roof down??? I play lot of competitions so need car I can fit my gear in. Have a e85 at moment and all fits in. Just keep looking enviously at an e89.

You can get one with a centre panel from the boot that opens so you can get skis/golf clubs in with the roof down. You'd probably get your golf stuff in the boot with the roof up I would think.

Thanks, I've just looked!
£170 for two fitted big bags and a small document floor space bag.
Bang goes another reason no to buy are car I don't need, only want !

Don't mention Toad of Toad Hall - poop poop!

Will the change impress me? I have still not had a test drive in a (probably futile) attempt to make me save some cash and curb my toad like enthusiasm. To be fair i have even been encouraged by my wife to buy with the "who knows what's around the corner" statement! Very reassuring! :D

Well, I've never driven a pre 2009 zed so I can't comment personally but the folks on here who have 'upgraded' have said the difference is huge.

Hopefully someone will comment and let you know exactly what differences you will find.

I absolutely love mine, it's the 'baby' of the pack but I'm more than happy. It goes really well, sport mode is great and good economy.

Have I sold it to you yet?!

Yes - I'm trying to be rational and make a reasoned approach - failing at every hurdle.

It all started by a friend saying the words "If to ever sell this Ron" thus sowing the seeds of change in my mind!

I bought the E85 as a one off toy only three years ago - I don't do regular car changes - Too mean I suppose. It will equate to £6k depreciation and only 10k miles Oh and spending another £20k.

Its going to be another one of those sleepless shall I, or shall I not sort of nights !

Change is significant - Feels like a much more grown up car. Everything just feels more solid. E85 more of a driving machine, but I am 30 so not too old and the E89 is perfect and sporty enough for 95% of the driving I do.

Golf clubs are a bit of an issue. I too used to love the fact that massive bag and trolley fitted in the back with the roof down. Not sure that is possible, unless you have a particularly slinky bag and cart). It looks really good with the roof up, so that's how I justify to myself.

There are "keep out" areas on the sides of the boot even with the roof up. There are stickers with big red X's on them. Not sure how safe it would be to put anything there even with the top up. I'd vote for getting the ski pass through and thinning out your golf clubs until they fit. Do they make folding trolleys?

We can fit two carry-on bags in the boot under the shield. The bags we tester were my ancient American sized Travelpro Roll Aboard and Debbie's smaller Euro carry on. You could get more with duffel bags or custom fit luggage. It is impossible to get the bags in or out of the boot with the top down.

Those stickered areas are only for when you want to put the roof down aren't they? You can stow stuff there when the roof is up.

That's correct Carol. The no go areas are only for when the roof is down. :)

I think it's amazing how much you can get in the boot of the e89, it's certainly class leading me thinks. As for difference in handling, the improvement in everyday ride quality is significantly greater than the loss in dynamic feel from the electric steering. Interior layout and quality has been improved also.

Yes there is an increase in weight, however its nowhere near as much as people on here believe 1,362/1,403 kg (2003/2006) vs 1,415 kg (1,470 kg with 68 kg for driver +7 kg for luggage) both figures are unladen weights for the 3.0 litre models, the 3.5 is 90 kg more, remember the bonnet and roof are made from Aluminium.

I certainly hope so, after years of packing the motorbike for a 2 week European tour the Z4 will I hope feel like a dream.

With the roof UP I can get 2 full sets of clubs in the car or 1 set and a push trolley with the 'ski' hole open.

With the rood DOWN I can get 2 sets of clubs in the boot but I need to use smaller carry bags.
