Makes You Think

Video from New Zealand. Like they say, you can't account for the what the other person is doing. Scary stuff.

You only learn that with experience really, when you get your license at 18 you know that what you do is correct and you know you are "right".

With experience, you know that being right is not helpful when trying to avoid a situation and your driving changes to defensive driving and reading much more into situations. I try to tell my children as well when they drive that when you look at Mr White Van driving in a lay by with a speed slower than yours but further ahead looking to join your road, that he will pull on the main road right in front of you and they don't care so you have to prepare for that. In their eyes he should not do that, which is correct - but being right does not help.

Exactly. I always tell mine that too. Treat every other driver as if they are an idiot and expect them to behave that way.

I always thought that everyone should have to ride a motorcycle for a period of time when they get their licenses.

1 To make them understand that a quick glance IS NOT checking to make sure it's clear to pull out.

And

2 To make them understand you have to drive like your invisable!

+1 to this as i am a motorcyclist myself, it would make drivers a lot more aware of whats going on outside the "bubble" of the car

Use to be a member of the Concerned Bikers Assocation here in the US. We developed program that is used in parts of the US as a segment of Driver's Ed here, where members of the club visited classes for a day. There was a video we played that really showed on camera how easy it is to take a quick glance then look away while pulling out into the path of an on coming motorcycle.

In the video the camera looks each way then in the direction the person is driving. You really have to be looking for it to see the bike in the movie, but when the car starts to pull the motorcycle hits the car and you see the guy fly across the car's bonnet.

I have been at the recieving end of a car pulling out on me, snapped my tibia in half and had to have a metal rod inserted in the bone.
