Maintenance charge

I've just put the volt meter across the under bonnet pins and it's showning 13.0volts
The car has been sitting for the last eight weeks on a maintenance charge.

I think that's ok?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you may have 13.0volts, but that doesn't mean you have enough amps to turn the engine over still.

Each of the 6 cells will normally give you 2.2v (6x 2.2v=13.2v) but the charge level will affect the amps more. If it was just Volts you require you could put a 1.2ah Burglar Alarm battery in, but it wouldnt start the car. A Car battery is 12v but normally 60-80A/h.

Its the magic triangle of Amps = Watts over Volts that give you your power output.

If its on a Maintenance Charger I'm sure it will be fine though.

The answer is but the press of a button away...

I've used the little charger for a few years now - it's supposed to be for golf carts etc.
The instructions ( now long gone) said that it charges and discharges without going too high or low - it's worked over several years now but I've never stuck the volt meter over the posts before.

Need a load meter like this

On the plus side, when March comes and the car comes out of hibernation, the car and it's battery will only be six months old so still under warranty !

If its been fine for several years, why bother checking and asking now?!

If the car starts, then all is well!!!

I've never stuck a volt meter across it before and I just got curious!

and if it doesn't start, try jumping it with cables and go for a nice long drive - and buy a new charger while you are out.

Get one of these and take it with you always in your glove box

It starts my TR6 after 5 months of winter hibernation from dead flat

That looks like a good bit of kit!

Theyre great, about twice the size of an iphone, recharge them off a USB port.
When your out and about you can charge fones from them, i think they start cars up to a 3.5ltr more than 20 times
Certainly spins my TR straight 6 as fast as its only battery.
Amazon have them on offer at the moment at £29.99, they were £99.99
