Maintaining 108's

It keeps cropping up on here – the dreaded corrosion on 108s.

I’m in my 5th year with a set of 108s and they have survived without corroding. The main reason for corrosion is the construction of the wheels from 2 separate parts. It is the joint between the two parts - the rim and star spoke (and indeed the connecting bolts) where the corrosion usually starts. This is generally caused by water getting into the joint and due to the slightly acidic nature of the water (rain water, salt spray from treated roads etc) galvanic/catalytic corrosion occurs – this is an electrochemical process in which one metal corrodes preferentially when in electrical contact with a different type of metal and both metals are immersed in an electrolyte (the rain water etc). Brake dust can make this worse as the glue that bonds the pad components is contained within the brake dust and itself can create a very mildly acidic solution when combined with water.

To prevent this a seal must be created between the two parts to stop the ingress of water and allowing the electrochemical process to start. On mine – when new and being aware of the problem – I removed the wheels and thoroughly cleaned and dried them. When dry I applied a thin bead of silicone sealant between the outer star spoke and the main body of the rim to prevent water getting in – you can’t see this from outside the vehicle from any angle. I thought about doing the outer joint but to date have had no problems here.

When cleaning the car it is essential to ensure that the rims are dry when you park the vehicle as water will drain to the lowest point within the rim and generally sit at the joint between the two components and as there may be some residual cleaning agent in the water and an ideal environment is created to start the dreaded corrosion.

I hope this helps anyone thinking of fitting or just maintaining their 108s.

Good advice

I got a my replaced last week by the dealer as they were all corroded (and the bast*rds washed my car even after i told them not too - so the paint is swirly again) And they said the new design shouldnt corroded anymore - which i highly doubt.

Anyway does anyone here have any experiance in how waxing the rims preserves them? I was tempted to put a few coats of HD wax on them once every few months to keep them sparkly.

'And they said the new design shouldnt corroded anymore - which i highly doubt'

- yeah, they told me that they'd had problems but 108s are now sorted (this was a year ago... ... i've had two more wheels since then).

They must just have a masive warehouse full in that they are happy to empty, rather than solve the problem.
:(

Hi Guys, I picked up my Z4 coupe on 108's about 2 weeks ago, and after reading about all the corrosion issues with the 108's i thought i'd give mine a check. As suspected they are a bit corroded.
My question is, how do you go about getting the dealer to change them under warranty, and how bad do they have be corroded? My warranty runs out in June so think i should get this sorted ASAP. Cheers

Same here original warranty runs out on 20/4.
Took it in on 1/4 .Just asked them to check " what I thought might be corrosion "
Advisor immediately got camera and took photos of all 4 wheels .Service Supervisor who handles this type of claim on vacation but back last Tuesday .He will handle
They send digital photos to BMW who hopefully approve replacement.
I mentioned that I had heard of problems  and he said just a few , with a smile .

Kaiser - If you find a good dealer, they will just swap them all out, without needing to take photos. I took mine to my local dealer, and even though 1 or 2 of them were kerbed, they replaced all 4.

All 4 wheels were replaced under warranty last year. But the corrosion started again early this year. If they are getting worse, I'm going to replace them with 18" Performance 269 (if I decide to keep the car longer). :( I don't want split rims again.

Will the 293 wheels on new Z4 have the same problem?

What other wheels, from other models, fit the Z4? You mention the performance range, but they'll be the wrong offset, surely?

No. They are exactly the same (even the offset). You can check the BMW Accessories section on their website. They are suitable for E85/E86. Old tyres can be fitted to the new wheels without problem. A whole set is £1,200 (wheels only).

BMW Performance Double spoke 269 - 18 inch, cast. The BMW Performance double spoke 269 sets whole new standards in lightweight aluminium wheel construction using low-pressure casting. This is suggested by the elegant minimalism of its sports-style design, and is confirmed by the very low diameter of the spokes results in considerably reduced weight. For BMW Z4 (E85/E86). 8J x 18 225/40 R18W front, 8.5J x 18 255/35 R18W rear. RSC complete wheel and tyre set with runflat properties, tyres: Bridgestone. Not for Z4 M Roadster and Z4 M Coupé. Available for Z4 Roadster/Coupe up to 02/2009.

Hmmm, so what styles are available?
Here's a good place to start - gives all the technical info to relating to offsets, etc.

Forgot to add, although I no longer have 108s, I can advise on them a bit. When mine were refurbed to sort the corrosion, I ensured the inner surface was given a good couple of coats of paint plus lacquer. This was also extended to cover the mating surface between the two parts (previously not protected by paint) to help stop water/salt mixture reacting with bare alloy.

AlanJ's excellent suggestion of silicone sealant would've been my next step, but a set of ellipsoids (my preferred wheel design) came up before I got around to doing this.

3 of 4 of my wheels had light curbing - 2 before i got the car and 1 by my gf.... but they replaced them all still without any fuss.

Possibly the same dealer? (If you're in Wiltshire...)

Nope mine was stratstones in Derby - but i am pretty sure most dealers should replace the corrosion without too much fuss... just need to find something to replace them with by winter now!

Sorry to dig this old one up, I have the 108's and they're showing corrosion but do I have any chance of getting them replaced as my zed is a 53 plate? In fact I have a 3rd party warranty, perhaps they're covered under that. Hmm!

The only way you will know is if you ask... :)

Yup, think I'll have a stab and see what gives :)
