Main places for listing your car for sale...

Is Auotrader still the place to sell your car, or has pistonheads and ebay taken over?
I'm a bit old school in thought on this, need some catching up to do :)

BTW. It's not the zed

I would say Auto Trader and Ebay are the best places to get noticed. Most people I speak to (who are not petrol heads), aren't aware of PH.

My experience of selling a car on eBay has never been great to be honest as you get a raft of numpties, silly offers and time wasters. People who make silly offers and then become aggressive through messaging which I had when trying to sell the Z3 earlier in the year. Would go Autotrader or Pistonheads route in future.

Think it depends on the value

I have been somewhat surprised recently - advertised my Passat estate simultaneously in Autotrader and Gumtree and received no calls from AT and a few from Gumtree. Sold it to first gumtree buyer who came to see

Previously also had good success selling lower value cars via Gumtree too

I always advertise higher priced cars in AT

Never used Ebay for car sales for reasons above - mostly 13 year old kids having some bidding fun I think

I've bought/sold a lot over the years and always swore by AT but the last one a few weeks ago stuck around on AT and Pistonheads but went instantly with an ebay fixed priced advert.

I've found auction sales tend to attract problems and chancers and a lot of 'decent' buyers are put off by ebay auctions so fixed priced ad's on ebay is probably the way I would try first next time especially as it's far cheaper than AT.

I put my car on ebay and had zero calls or messages. I put my dad's car on autoloader and had zero calls. Both were reasonable prices. I would still go with autotrader though. It's a rip off but has a better prestige. I had the most traction for both cars on here so stick it here for sure!

I've used all three PH, Autotrader and EBay over the years.

If it is something a bit special and is likely to appeal to enthusiasts then PH is the obvious choice.

If your car is more humdrum, then I'd advise the other two.

Something else to consider if you don't want the hassle of time wasters then you could use We Buy Any Car, however don't expect to get the retail value of your car.

Auto trader is really overpriced.
eBay classified is how I've sold my last 3 cars. One was an M3. It's only £15 for a month.
You do get people emailing stupid offers, but just ignore them. It's only an email at the end of the day.

Serious buyers will always shine though.

As above, it's price dependant, time of year, what type of car etc etc..... Our 3 most recent examples.

We bought a 54 plate 1.2 Clio for less than £1k via AT 2mths ago and we bought it 4 days after it was listed. I've just sold the same car via AT after listing it yesterday for a small profit as it's a perfect 1st time buyers car. Ad cost £14.95.

Tried to sell a 14 plate RS Clio via AT and Ebay classifieds a few weeks ago, not a sniff from either as the car was a 13k hot hatch. Cost me £60 in ads. Ended up selling it for £12920 via WWAC, no hassle, no tyre kicking etc etc....Money in our account within 4 days and the deal done within 30mins.

Bought the Z4 via AT but this was after the advert had expired and I actually paid £600 less than he was adamant he wanted 2wks previous to when I'd spoken to him when the advert was still 'live'.

Swings and roundabouts generally. For us, AT has proved to be invaluable and we saved £600 on one car and made £100 on the other.

All cars sold on Pistonheads within a day. I am a long time member, so advertising is free for me. Love the phone number settings as well that you get a 'fake' number redirected to your real one, and the moment you mark the advert as sold, no more calls can come through.

Amazing the type of people that call as well, for the Polo it was a granddad who wanted to buy it as a first car for his grandson.

All experiences useful to hear so thanks folks.

I'm about to put my civic ep3 type r up for sale, which I would have thought would be a targeted audience, however as a seller it's all about widening the chance of getting that one special person out there that will buy my car at the price etc. etc.
So, will probably prep for placing on CTR owners forum, PH and AT.

NB. I realise it's winter time with Christmas looming, but I'm hoping there's a car fan out there who's looking to treat themself to an early christmas present :driving:

What's your Alias on PH? Never spotted PVR on there.

Always PH for me but then I haven't been selling daily runabouts -still get dreamers ,chancers and time wasters even on PH -thats just the way it i guess

Do you need to blank out registration numbers, or would it be better to show as the actual vehicle in question?
