Main dealer used cars - discounts etc...

Hi all,

I'm looking at a couple of 5 year old, previous shape X3's, the 3.0sd / 35d twin turbo version. Asking prices are £18-19.5k, just wondered what kind of discount would be realistic to aim for against these main dealer screen prices?

Also, has anyone managed to get a 2 year warranty out of a main dealer?

Finally, has anyone got experience of the 3 litre twin turbo diesel engine, as used in 3 and 5 series, X3, X5, etc. Any issues, points to watch, etc.

Thanks,

Ian

Expect them to have a margin of @ £1500 in an regular car and X3, but more in an X5. From this margin they have to pay vat on the difference between the price they bought it for, and the selling price, prepare it for sale ( service, tyres etc), pay for advertising, salesman's commissions and of course the warranty. Don't expect big discounts, a few hundred at best, most dealers don't have massive margins. They usually want their cars to be the cheapest on Autotrader, so keep prices low.The best time to buy is a couple of days before the month end , as all cars will get hit with another months "book drop",so you're in a better bargaining position. Avoid the X3, it's one of BMW's worst cars.Happy hunting.

All good advice until the last part
"Avoid the X3 it's one of BMW's worst cars " :o
What have you based that on ?
Ive had 520d,645Ci,Zcoupe,330d & recently picked up a 3.0i sport X3 & it has been a revelation to say the least .
I read all the web reviews which initially had me questioning my decision to look for one but so glad i ignored the drivel written .
Hard ride / Dont think so . it wafts along in supreme comfort & silence whilst soaking all bumps & ruts with zero rattles .
Poor cabin quality / Don't think so , its covered 104k without a mark to be found internally with everything working as it did from factory & leather seats looking as new
One other note on buying to the OP is they wont drop prices as the months go on  you,l find they will rise slightly as you drift into winter & especially so once the white stuff starts falling .
Happy hunting

In comparison to a Z coupe, being repeatedly kicked in the spine by Chuck Norris would feel like a luxuriantly comfortable experience.

I think mark up is usually at least 20% on an AUC car. However, no matter what they have done to the car they will be convinced they have spent £1500 prepping it so expect next to nothing in terms of discount for a car at that price. You will get a token gesture probably.

That was probably a demo, cancelled order, order filler or ex staff car which would have a higher margin than the much older cars the OP is looking at.

I got a 2 year warranty with mine after a fight so worth a try! More inclined with more powerful cars as a selling tool

I think BM dealers have always given large discounts, I know I've never paid anything like OTR cost.

On my last 35iS I negotiated a £5k discount just after the car was announced, which meant I lost naff all come sale time 14 months later.

It was the 8th car I'd bought at at my dealership (including daughters cars) and that helped I'm sure.

Depending on how badly its priced I'd say up to £2500. I got £1500 off my sticker price but it took quite a bit of negotiating and nobody else showed real interest in it for 2 months..

X3 feelings based upon the look of the thing, and the cost of it, I'd rather have an X5,especially if buying used, and 2 friends who had them and they were in and out of the dealers all the time with faults which the dealer never managed to fix. Both got rid in the end. Just passing on the experience of others. If the OP wants one, then fine by me.
