Main Dealer now charges for loan car

If a car was going in for warranty work I would expect a courtesy car.
If its just going in for normal servicing or other repairs outside warranty I wouldn't expect a courtesy car.
If the charge for a courtesy car is only £20, surely if you need a car this would be cheaper than taxis to and from the dealership anyway and therefor be worth the cost.
Anyway the indy that I use doesn't provide a courtesy car as its an extra cost that they don't want to pay for but will collect your car and return it same day.

Ok so this I found truly shocking.

Seems that Stephen James BMW now charge £20 per day for a loan car.

Am I mistaken to think that as a prestige brand they shouldn't be doing that?

I have promptly notified them that I will have to use a different dealer for my servicing which is closer and doesn't charge for a loan car!

Go to Munich Legends.

All courtesy cars are free, however they are a bit old.

Mercedes charge £36 per day for a loan car
No, they don't.

Sytner might, Inchcape might, the London-based Mercedes-Benz Retail Group might, but Mercedes don't.

I don't know who you use, but Oxford, Reading, Aylesbury, Milton Keynes and Beaconsfield all charge.

It didn't say it was for insurance, but just their charge rate. They charge £20 for a collection too!

£12 for a F-type I will happily pay! ;-)

Mercedes, Audi, Porsche don't charge for loan cars.

My car was in for 1.5 days and that cost me £40.

I think this is just poor service. Its a premium brand and they really don't provide a premium service. Honestly I called before xmas and waited for a call back that I never got.

Sadly not quite true Porsche charge £20 also but claim its an insurance fee which is suppose is fair

At my local BMW dealership I put the insurance fee to the test asking if I could I provide insurance. They were perfectly happy with this as long as I could provide the paperwork before picking the car up.

Been happening for years at all of my local dealers, although the specialists don’t charge if they’ve got a car for you to use.

Last time I used a dealer, I was provided with a hire car from enterprise, but then spent half an hour filling in their forms, only to be told that I couldn’t have it as I hadn’t brought my driving licence or insurance details, and they needed them to ensure I had the correct insurance to cover the hire car.

For this ‘special deal arrange with Enterprise’ they wanted £20/day, plus a £1000 deposit for a ‘courtesy’ car for a service I was paying over £150/hour for, plus it would have to be covered on my own insurance

(I needed it for 5 days as I was leaving it there on the Monday morning and picking it up when I got home on Friday afternoon)

Went onto the Enterprise website and found the same car for £15/day from the same location, and with a £100 deposit, including insurance :headbang:

Now I just go straight to Enterprise and don’t even bother asking the Indy/specialist for a hire car (but only if both of my cars happen to be off the road at the same time),

My local Sytner dealership don't charge me a penny for a loan car. They'll even pay for a taxi to collect and drop me off ('payable on account' meaning it's all paid for my them) if required.

Sounds like a dealership that still has respect for the customer and treats them correctly.

How far is it from North Devon?

Well it isn't Sytner Sunningdale who have a workshop in Ascot, because they've charged me £15 a day for years!

But for servicing I don't have a problem with that - as Nictrix says cabs would probably cost more. And they would waive the charge if you arranged your own insurance, but the insurer generally wanted at least £15 so there didn't seem much point!

For warranty or recall work I wouldn't want to be paying though. :(

My regular Indy is TWG Automotive in Camberley who do have a courtesy car, but also charge and if you want it you'll usually get a later booking date. And it's one of those 3-cylinder Mini Coopers - not a patch on the R56 Cooper the former Mrs Tidy has.

In the Midlands so pretty far I guess.

Shame

Stratatone Silverlink Tyneside wanted £12 insurance cover to loan me a car while they did the power cable safety recall - terrible service!

I would never pay for a courtesy car unless it was much better than my own and something I had an interest in. At main dealer labour rates, the few quid it costs them to lend you a car for a few hours should be more than covered.
If people feel strongly about it, why not a group letter to BMW saying we will not use them if this practice is not eradicated ?
If extinction rebellion can cause a fuss . . . .
