Main beams - are HIDs suitable

As I have now converted all the front lights to either led or HID I'm now considering replacing the main beams.

How well do the HID bulbs work optically as main beams. I am aware that I would need H7R bulbs with Anti glare for a reflector headlight

Any comments would be helpful

No better or worse than those in dipped beam.
You need a system capable of flash to pass as xenon bulbs hate being cycled and will burn out. That's why OEM Zeds use a shutter on the xenon bulb to create the main beam and the halogen is an extra and flash.

Later generation OEM have new technology which gets around this.

Bit of an issue that!!! Off thee wall idea, has anyone just installed H7 LEDs as main beam? Would that work?

Bit of a coincidence that. Just done mine and they work perfectly. So much better to have consistent light output than the almost yellow standard main beam when compared to HID's. Almost glad the nights are drawing in now! :D
 
Just out of interest are there issues with projector lights passing MOT's? I know standard lights with HID added in have problems passing MOTs as they now test beam patterns. Projector lights just have the angled cut offs.

Also how about the LED sidelights and MOTs?

Bought them from HIDS Direct on Ebay. Forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean when you ask about 'flash to pass'?

No, you can't. HID's take a bit of time to ignite, so you lose the "instant flash" ability. It's more, pull the flasher, lights ignite (flash bright), comedown a bit and then off, release flasher. When I had my Elise I did the dipped beam, but not he main, because of this.

Actually, I tried this yesterday and you can - with maybe a half-second delay. Not enough for me to worry about.
