MAF showing 0% airflow

Ok, i now have a conclusion of sorts. A few days ago i was driving and the EML lit up followed by the emissions light :o Also at the same time the engine tone changed and me zed started running like a "bag of shite" :(
So i gave another great mate (Neil at shepshed watermills, Zedfest) a call and went to get a diagnostic from the codes thrown. It turned out to be this,

The Throttle Body. BMW wanted an obscene amount for a new one (of course) so, me & neil looked online and found one on fleabay from an E90 (exactly the same part) for £14 free postage :)

It arrived the next day!! (BRILLIANT SERVICE FROM THE SELLER) I fitted it after wok, took 30 minutes.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! the zed is now NEW to me again! :) The power is instant, instead of slight hesitation, which i have always experienced, but thought normal for the past 5 years of ownership. It is SO SMOOTH also.

The lumpy idle the zed has always had is now gone :) SO CHUFFED!! :D
BUT, still gettin 0.00% airflow :idunno:

Thanks to everyone for the help. Cheers, tug

Yes mate, the paddle was weak and had a rattle coming from inside, as if the spring had snapped or something :idunno:

The "new" one's paddle is normal. It needs a concerted effort to move with a finger pushing against it. The difference is night & day i am so pleased.

It probably sounds daft but, it was as if the zed knew about my concerns & decided to point me in the right direction

Cheers, tug

Good info! This is the first I have heard of one of those failing. They do very little in practice as they are normally just held open all the time with the servo but I guess if the mechanism breaks then the flap stays closed (or partially closed), hence the problems. I wouldn’t worry about your MAF reading zero as per my previous posts.

Yes mate, after researching the throttle body problem, there is hardly any info out there, so its probably a good thing for anybody else with similar symptoms to pick up on this thread.

Thanks for your help Ph & see you at Zedfest?

Cheers, tug

Been reading with interest as my 2.00 is the same. Almost think my car is going to stall and the idle is up and down like no business. So the part above sorted all the issues for you?. I still get good MPG at 30.1.

Yes mate, my mileage went up from 29.1 to 32.7 now :)

If you have a rough idle & seems slightly sluggish when givin it some, then i would suggest you take the throttle body off & give it a good clean mate. Check how strong the paddle is, mine was very weak compared to the "new" one i installed. Also give it a bit of a shake while listening closely. If anything makes a noise like it is loose then yours might have gone like mine. My "new" one was solid & silent.

Hope it helps. Cheers, tug

My brother in law has a garage so will take it to him and get him to check it. I thought it could be when it's cold in Edinburgh but its been warm for a while now and still up and down and surges away or when stopped dips below the 1k rev if that makes sense.
Also wasnt sure if it was an airflow pipe as that was mentioned before by someone.
@ RW it got hooked up a few weeks ago and no errors or anything showing up.

Car went in for a Carbon clean/blast. By the look of the puff of white smoke that came out after it then a lot of gunk.
The idle has settled and better than it was. It was suggested as I don’t drive it long distances and town driving this hasn’t helped and if I have a full tank the full can go off after a period of time?.

Will give it a longer drive at the weekend and see how it goes.
