My mechanic has said either a new Bosch one or second hand genuine one. Dont take imitations as they can throw up other issues. So do we have a reputable bmw breakers here on the forum?

I agree I seen a few youtube videos of ebay ones giving bad idle revs and cutting out sometimes.

If the Z4 is anything like the E46 (and it most likely will be as they share a lot of components) then don't get aftermarket ones. I've found BMWs are very sensitive to having the correct sensors etc. Go for the second hand if money is tight but ask that you can return if faulty

Update...

New airflow meter has not solved the problem. Ive unplugged the sensor and it drives without cutting out, but when i put my foot on the brake, the revs bop up and down.

Ive spoke to the breakers. Ive got another sensor on the way to try, but other than that, my mechanics stumped!!

:(

You'll most likely have a hole or tear in one of the intake hoses/boots causing a vacuum leak. These run from the air box to the intake manifold and brake servo.

Check everything between the airbox and the throttle body, take it all off and clean it up. Remove the idle control valve and give that a clean as well. Inspect the seal on the DISA as well.

If that's not the issue, at least you've given everything a clean up, and it will only take you an hour. This is good preventative maintenance anyway.

Ive checked all the pipes, but when the sensor is unplugged it does not cut out at all. So must be sensor related some how.

DISA has been checked. That was fine.

Idle control valve...il give that a clean anyway but it idles fine, only cuts out at 4-6K rpm. Where will i find the IDV?

Had same issue with bad idle when fitting supercharger kit. When I unplugged MAF car ran ok, but when plugged in car ran cr*p. It was a hose lose on the inlet side. My guess is you have a split in an inlet hose.

Update on the issue....

Bought a new airflow sensor, didn't fix the issue. Still cutting out.

Spoke to the breaker I got the new one from, who sent me another one to try...

As if by magic, she's all fixed!
