MAF Airflow Sensor, where abouts.....?

Further to my alarmingly low fuel economy (22mpg ish), having done a little research it appears the MAF airflow sensor may need a clean. I've had a quick look but am struggling to find any relevant info on the sensor as the term doesnt draw any results from the forum search.

As the car is out of warranty I don't intend to deliver it to BMW with a blank cheque so thought I may have a hunt for the MAF myself and, if possible, give it a clean. So, as this forum is the fountain of all Z4 knowledge was hoping someone may be able to post of pic of the MAF's hiding place in a pre facelift 3.0 and explain how it would be cleaned. :)

Failing that any adive on the topic would also be well received!

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Cars just approaching the 30k barrier and been serviced accordingly at BMW. IS it likely at this distance the MAF could require a clean?

Cleaning the MAF (Hot Film-Mass Air Meter) is really easy.

You can get some MAF Cleaner Spray, or a spray can of Break Cleaner...

This pic shows the MAF. It mounts directly to the Air Filter Box.

Remove the MAF, then spray the inside of the MAF. Let dry for a couple of minutes then reinstall.

I had the same problem with fuel mileage. But my problem was not the MAF.

Nice1 Shipkiller, thanks for the links. :) Albeit, it would probably be cheaper to fly you over and put you up in a 5 star hotel for a few days then ask BMW to sort the issue if its not the MAF! :o

Will have a goosey gander for the MAF later.

Anyone any ideas where I might get soem MAF cleaner/brake cleaner here in the UK?

Isn't poor fuel economy also likely with a lambda/oxygen sensor not reading correctly?

Maybe worth a quick look if others concur?

Sounds expensive.

Can be, these cars have more than one I believe! and they usually cost over £100 each. That said a dianostic computer could tell you if you have a faulty o2 sensor pretty quickly (I also have the tool to remove them ;))

Also be very careful not to spray the hot wire directly or touch it when cleaning the MAF/AFM they are fragile!

You really don't need a computer to tell. If you have a digital Voltmeter, you can monitor your O2 sensor voltages and see if they are low, but not low enough to trip the SES light.

Read my post on how I diagnosed this: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4488&start=0

and here on O2 Sensor operation: http://www.aa1car.com/library/o2sensor.htm
