Made An Offer On A Z4MC....But

So i put in an offer on a Z4MC on Tuesday. It was only £500 below asking at £15500 (asking was £15995). Following day the dealer calls me back to say the owner wasn't willing to move. I didn't realise when i viewed the car it was being sold on behalf of someone. Anyway that's not really an issue. I told the dealer im not prepared to pay £16k as i was already pushing the bounds of my budget at the offer price. Dealer said to leave it with him to see if he can get the owner to agree.

Anyhow - whats a reasonable amount of time to wait? I have another car on the table which is £15k which if im not getting the first one i want to pursue.

Also should i be chasing the dealer or just let them sweat it out? Suppose i could give them a bell and say either let me know by end of today or i'm going elswhere.

Depends how much you want it I guess. Personally I'd think that £500 on 15k is a small price to pay if the car's the right one. If it isn't the right one, then saving another £500 is unlikely to make it much better...

Tell them you're looking at another car and if you don't hear very soon then you'll buy the other one. They must be taking a cut for selling it for someone else, so you'd think it would be in their interest.

Thanks for the advice all taken on board. I wouldn't want to give full asking as there is a slight blip in the service schedule. Its all been done according to mileage but the last service was 2011 so its long overdue. I actually do have another on the table which i walked away from as its poverty spec, but overall condition was better and the price was exactly £15k.

I have just spoken to the dealer and said they have until tomorrow lunch time to let me know or i will be putting an offer on the other car. Lets see what they come back with.

Are these the same dealers that are gonna drop a grands worth of Insp 2 and full detail into the car ?

I guess if there prepared to do a real inspection 2 even at an indy (£600-£700) and a decent machine correction (£300) then i guess there trying to juggle figures because effectively your asking for £1400-£1500 off the price.

If it was me, I would get the money for the Insp 2 knocked off the price and get it done yourself, so you know it's been done properly with someone you trust. I wouldn't be happy with the seller doing it to get a sale as I'm sure they would cut corners to increase their profit!

The service is part of their standard terms, not something i specifically asked for, i would have walked away from the car if the service wasn't included, or would have asked even more off the price.

And as the car is Ruby Black it just needs a light mop to get rid of the surface scratches, i agreed this with the garage before negotiating  . I see what you are saying though. Really none of this would be a problem if i could deal direct with the owner, as i expect the garage are taking at least 10% cut for selling it, so the owner is letting it go already below market value, which is where i expect the problem lies.

I think your right..

Believe me,to get a ruby black car looking 100% correct on the paint is no mean feat....lol..

I suspect if they include a "service" as part of the package, they wasnt expecting the price of an inspection 2...They just cannot be done cheaply, whoever does it..

+1 100%

Any car sales garage that has 'serviced' a car before sale will be done on the cheap with the cheapest parts possible used if needed. They're in the business for profit not your satisfaction.

I wouldn't trust an Inspection 2 on an M with anyone less than a specialist. Do you know who this Independant is? Do they know anything about M cars or the engine? Questions I would be asking. It's a major service which is already late on the schedule, it'll look even worse with some random garage doing the work.

A full detail could mean anything, a polish guy rubbing a chamois full of grit down it for all you know. Have you asked?

If I was ploughing 15/16k into this car, I would want decent answers to this or be running a mile.

If that's the answer to the service question, guarantee it won't be a proper Inspection 2. Which after over 3 years before a service, it will need with a proper specialist who knows what they are doing. Or you could go along with their service and probably end up with some cheap wrong grade oil and cheap non OEM filters/parts.

I'm with CornishRob on this. I can see no reason why the dealer won't negotiate on the service other than the fact it's easy money for them and they don't have to do anything except stamp a book

It might be their standard terms but they can change them easily enough if they want the sale.

CORRECT - almost no chance this will be perfect job at the relevant price - few hundred quid - it just will not happen.
Still, you're probably more bothered by the servicing than the paint correction!

Guys i doubt this dealer would risk a reputation of a bad service for the likes of a BMW. I expect these guys know their onions when it comes to servicing a car, and i will ask for receipts and a check list of work completed. They know it needs the valve clearances checking and i trust them wholly that it will be done. I should probably also mention they are also giving a 3 months warranty on the car so it would be in their interest not to see the car again!

I know my way around an engine, its not too dissimilar to any other other straight 6 bmw with the exception of dual vanos and ITB's, oh and a few extra ponies. It wont take long to pull a filter or two to see what brands they used for the work.

Either way they have until lunch tomorrow and as it just so happens Paza3 on here has one at a very reasonable price that wants for nothing. So if they mess me around i will be happy to walk away.

As for the paint, i doubt there will ever be a time where Ruby Black will be perfect, not even from factory. Just some will be better than others.

They have to give a 3 month warranty......

But i agree, they know there onions.....But i was merely pointing out that an inspection 2 cannot be done on the cheap so to speak,so they would have to factor this into the deal..
IIRC parts alone are around £350 inc Oil..

I would have thought it would all have been done inhouse looking at their facility....so chances are they have a decent detailer too..Fingers crossed.

Yes all is done in house, have seen their workshop, its like an operating theater  . So you would hope they know what they are doing.

Suppose i just hate waiting and not knowing the outcome, i like things to be simple, hence my name. I also like pies :tumbleweed:

Ha ha... Your not on your own with the pie thing ;)

Yep,its not really fair to keep you waiting.. IMHO you have made a valid and good offer at £500 under asking..

Looking at the spec/colour of Paza's and it will have CSL's on too, dare i say it might be a better car at lesser money ??

Yep agreed, though i doubt the CSL's would come in at that price, but a deal could maybe be done still in my budget.

My main concern is this one has only 41k miles, and i tend to do 15-20k a year. If i can keep it to roughly 70k miles come resale time it will still have a reasonable amount in it. Where a 90k motor will be worth a good few grand less. I do agree though Paz's car looks very well sorted, i hate buying cars :headbang:

Wow....

15-20k a year...

Would be great to have inspection 2 under your belt then...Would save on a bill as and when it was due..

I think Paza has sold the black M3 wheels so you might be in for a bargain if you go in that direction..

I get you n the mileage thing, its definately a consideration, but maybe the grand in difference would be the same come sale time ??? i dunno..
