Has anyone seen anything like this before...?

One of our MacBook Air's at work has developed a bit of a fault. Its just over 3 years old, so just out of warranty, but the battery has basically expanded and pushed up the keyboard! You also can't shut the lid over without it pressing the keys... :?

Apple tell us they will charge for replacing the battery, but anything that's been damaged with the battery expanding will be replaced FOC so hopefully new keyboard and base enclosure.
 
Not seen anything like that before... seems like they should do the lot FOC though to be honest, I bet if you were in the states they would.
 
Fair deal from Apple I would say though.

I have had computers less than a week out of warranty and they told me to f* off, even though I buy dozens of them.

Doesn't the sale of goods act state that there is a reasonable life expectancy to products, something like 3 years? Not sure how it works but I read a moneysupermarket article about it a while ago.
 
Apple claims it expands to stop it from exploding! :? We'll get it booked in over the next couple of days and see what they say. I think we might be looking at around £100 for a replacement battery.

Also, its only giving around 30 minutes battery time from a full charge.
 
Spectre is correct, doesn't matter if it out of warranty or not, these sort of items should work for 5 to 6 years! Where did you buy it from?
 
Apple haven't seen it yet, but I mentioned it to them when we were out at the Apple store collecting a Mac Pro earlier in the week.

Maybe they will agree to replace the battery FOC when they see how bad it is.

I'll update when we know more.

Good point... and if it's for work who gives a stuff if it's replaced under warranty or not... unless it's your own business, of course?
 
i wouldn't be charging it. When those type off batteries do that they are getting dangerous. Watch this video and ill see what can happen. Watch from 2 mins in and ill see what can happen :o

I've seen similar on a phone before, but a laptop :o

Thats in a sorry state. On the point of warranty you can get them to provide a goodwill gesture if you talk to them and do your research. If this is a known problem then youre in a strong position.

Similar thing happend to my gf's old iMac (white thick one). She bought it about 6 years ago and had gradually seen pixels disappear to the point where complete lines were missing vertically across the screen. Emailed Apple, told them I knew it was a known fault and supplied photos, seriel numbers etc and they offered to replace the screen even though it was way put of warranty. Went to a local repair specialist and got it FOC.

The same sort of people that have 3 monitors connected to a high performance workstation in their office!

The MacBook Air was one of the early ones (4 years old now) and was spec'd pretty high when purchased... a premium was paid for the solid state hard drive option.
