M6

Has anyone driven one of the latest, and have any thoughts to share?

Having driven the M4 i was left a bit disappointed, i'm wondering if the M6 is a bit more interesting. I wonder if it's more dailyable than a Z4, but by being that, does it make it less special? And does having a stupidly powerful engine help offset that. For example, i hate driving my Z4MC anywhere menial, and i tell my Mrs off for even considering using it for a shopping trip.

This vid (yes it's a 650i) made me think 'wow they can look awesome': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7EK16VYblw

LOL really? Its a modern day BMW not a 250 GTO! A totally pointless car. Silly fast for UK roads and normal driving not good enough for a track day weapon. Thats without doing your arse on running costs and depreciation.

I think if you're disappointed by the M4 the M6 would be no different. A great car, no doubt. But for me the DCT box kills it.

Had the M4 not been available as a manual I wouldn't have opted for one. The M6 if you want a seriously fast daily / GT crusier. But don't intend to have fun around any singletrack A / B-roads.

Well the overriding opinion seems pretty anti-M6 car, maybe we should discuss the motorway.

RE daily/crappy use of Z4: i'm just not a fan of doing short 1 mile journeys regularly with the s54, i'm a firm believer the engine needs to be fully warmed rather than spending most of it's life doing drives you could do in a fiesta.

Generally, i'm going through the motions of lots of potential cars, the others are the R8 V10, AM Vantage (V8, or V12 if cost permits), a 911 (997.2 or 991 cost permitting). Not much else sits in the price bracket.

I think its a great car, but im too tight too throw that much money away on depreciation etc.

Im in the same position as you really. Been through cars which I could potentially afford and nothing ticks the boxes really. I also need some more space, so im thinking of changing car types for a while and going Discovery 4.

Not very Petrolhead like I know!

Hah, i always contemplate a fully practical option, or a second car.. both mean detracting from the maximum potential spend on the 'fun' car though, and i don't like that idea at all :P

I used to have a Renault Espace.. It was brilliant. Nicknamed by my mates as 'the party bus', it was part of some prettttty fun trips/festivals etcetc. I guess the ideal garage would probably involve a range rover and one of the above cars, but they're not exactly cheap.

Ive driven one. Epic GT car stupidly fast. You can be in 3rd gear at 65-70 and you will get wheel spin, power everywhere it also sounds much better than the M4.

Just found the depreciation not worth the purchase. The one I looked at was £59k it as 6 months old had everything and had a list price of £104k nearly 50% in 6 months. Its also quite wallowy but it is a big car.

Would have a 911 every day over one.

Begs the question why anyone would buy a new car?

To have a car exactly the way you want? If financing to get a much better APR? So that the technology in your car isn't constantly 4-6 years out of date?

You've got to remember that the 50% depreciation isn't 50%. BMW have been offering £25k+ discounts of M6's for a while now, and that's offered up front without any further negotiation.

That is true you could have bought a a new one with a 25k reduction but still at 55% the price of a new one with full spec and 6 months old… no point buying a new one it was basically a demonstrator and the finance deal was very similar. With BMW being its own bank the APR is always something they are willing to bend on.

I don't know if they are offering the same deal on the facelift car.

I'd like to now how the APR's differ. BMW might be it's own bank, but as most dealers are merely franchises how much control do they have?

Equally, "BMW FS" are in effect their own business, with their own targets etc. There is only so much sway a dealer will have.

Typically a new APR of 3-4% will be anywhere from 7-10% for nearly new. It makes a big difference.

The driveway appeal, gotta be better than next door. Let them continue on their lease 'bought' cars as it gives me something 60% less in 3 years time.

Well that M6 as I said was a demo so not technically a second hand car. But the APR was negotiated to 3.5%, in my experience from buying BMWs second hand from BMW the rates start ok but push and you can bring it down without too much hassle.

My first BMW was a 3 year old 3 series and the APR on a 10k loan over 2.5 years started at 6 and they brought it down to 3.5, without too much effort. Same with my Z4M but 2 years and the APR was at 4.

TBH I haven't bought a second hand car for 4 years so unless the rates have risen substantially I haven't seen a rate higher than 6 on a second hand car I was buying.

Cant really comment on BMWs policies but only from experience but if you go at the end of the month and they are trying to fill their quota, or in winter when its quite on the performance car front (usually buy my cars in November) or you walk away they will start to negotiate. Nobody was interested in my Z4M when I was looking, had been sitting 6 weeks so they wanted it shifted. That M6 also… it has been reduced by 5k to sell. The M6 was just a hard sell for a lot of people at great car but there are lots of amazing cars at the same price point. Difficult market.

Depends on your situ, the dealer and how desperate you are for the car and how desperate they are to sell it.

We have a 640d and while you cant compare its performance to a M6 I will add that the 640d always feels big and heavy to drive and it isn't very rewarding when you get to the corners at all and the steering is very remote and around tight bends its no fun at all, its very good in a straight line and covering big miles though which as a GT car you would expect it to do that.

The ride is absolutely woeful on run flats and 20" rims too but I have swapped to none run flats and its made a world of difference so I would imagine the ride on the M6 to be fine, I adore the M6 but I would imagine it still suffers with its weight and size but I would love one if my numbers came up though and have something else lighter and more nimble too.

That's fair enough, just goes to show what you can achieve with a bit of negotiation and good timing

:?

Have to disagree. You can pick up a fun, totally reliable, low maintenance, second car for £1500. The classifieds are full of them. :D

As to the M6, its simply not special enough, IMHO. I don't really get it and suspect that is one reason depreciation is so Epic.
