Dont beat yourself up on whether you use long life 01 or 04. The real issue is to change the oil regularly at around 6000 miles. The long life stuff is just a modern idea to extend the interval between servicing. I read somewhere that the BMW service intervals should be regarded as the very maximum and that if you want to retain your car in top condition to stick to the 6000 mile mantra. It doesnt really matter whether you use LL oil or whatever brand, just stick to more regular oil changes.
On a high mileage car you could always step up a notch on the oil viscosity to reduce consumption say a 10-30 or perhaps add some Wynns oil treatment which I have previously found very good.
On a proper car like yours with an oil dipstick its easy to change the oil yourself, just buy a manual oil extractor from ebay and away you go, saving some proper money.
