M54- water pump dramas/HELP

OK- thought I had this smashed!

Replacing pump and thermostat- circoli brand

Fan shroud out, air box out, undertray off, belts off- flying
Hoses off, pulley off, electric connectors off- winning
Waterpump undone, worked free, same with thermostat- jacked engine up, both off and new ones one!

All done up and engine running- but noted a small drip running up to temp on the hose that connected to LHS of thermostat- on reflection the hose didnt marry up well- so working on the assumption that its not a good match, whipped stuff off and replaced with old thermostat

all connected up again and there is a definite leak somewhere- now running down the front of the block

I've run out of time today so I'm working on the assumption that the hoses I took off didnt like being disturbed and need replacement

Anyone got any sage advice before I go again tomorrow?
 
And- if I need new hoses where is best to get them as ECP/GSF don't appear from the web to stock them?

Have a check of the water temperature sensor situated on the hose you describe on the left hand side. I think it's the radiator bottom hose iirc.
Access is tight but have a feel when the engine is up to temp (not running obviously!). There is a small o-ring that seals the sensor and they can weep...mine did. The coolant can run down the underside of the hose and you'll never see it unless you have a feel with some tissue paper etc. It can then run down the block or drip onto the engine undertray. Just buy a new sensor with o-ring, plenty on Ebay. Number 5 in this diagram.20190304_225722.jpg

Thanks Si- Ill have a look as thats the location it was coming from- assume it screws out?

Is it possible the O seals in the rad pipes are up for replacement?

The water temp sensor clicks in iirc.
The o-rings in the rad pipe connectors may be past their best also yes.
A lot of 'problems' on these cars is age related. :thumbsup:

There is a built-in rubber seal in the face of the thermostat that compresses on the machined face of the engine block but I also put a smear of JB Weld Silicone RTV on the face.
There is a quite substantial o-ring around the waterpump and it fits very tightly in its housing in the engine block so you don't need to add any extra sealant around it imo. A smear of washing up liquid around the o-ring helps when fitting the new one :thumbsup:

Temp sensor clips or screws in? I reckon that’s the culprit

Worth putting anything on the o rings of the pipes if I can’t source new ones?

No problem Stuart :)
Fairly certain the temp sensor just pushes in and clips in. Not sure but there might be a small wire clip you pull out a bit with a screwdriver blade...it was a while ago that I replaced mine.
Have a look on Realoem.com to see if you can just get new o-rings for the hose connectors :thumbsup:

That sorted it Simon. Was the push in sensor that was a bit wobbly and the lower hose was on, not just ‘on on’!

Forum doing what it’s good at- case closed!
