M54 vs N54 Engines : What are the differences?

I had a read of that before, but couldn't see much other than...

There are some differences between the M54 and N54; the M54 is a single-piece block, with the water pump housing cast into the block, and is a closed-deck design, compared to the N54's two-piece block with a separate bedplate, electric water pump, and open deck.

... So thought someone on here would know a bit more?
 
I'm sure someone will come along with more answers. I assumed that the N54 would be a variant of the N52-the aluminum/magnesium engine and the M54 was the older aluminum only design, correct?

Nope...

Surprisingly the engine block of the N54B30 is similar to the older generation BMW M54B30 engine - all aluminum with cast iron cylinder liners. This is because the newer N52 aluminum-magnesium engine block was not deemed as suitable for turbo-charging with the above-mentioned engineering goals.
 
So the block is different, as above.
The inlet and exhaust manifolds will be very be different as boosted.
Injectors will flow more.
Cam profiles will be different due to higher RPM power band and boost.
Rods/Pistons will be stronger due to much higher torque, and cost 2x as much!
Cyl Head doesnt look like it has VANOS on Realoem

Maybe a more suitable question is, what are the similarities? The Bore/Stroke are the same which means it *may* share the crankshaft! The M54 was probably a good base though! ;)

much more torque? even tho the n54 has 30 bhp more it barley has anymore FT/LB's than the M54 unit..think around 221 ftlbs vs the n54's 232ft lbs

Erm.. Where's that data from? Official figures are 295lbft but dynos have proven around 330 in overboost! Remapped engines give over 400 I've seen which would turn the M54's rods to putty!

Edit: I think you're confusing the N/A N52 with the Bi-Turbo N54?
