M54 head gasket replacement

Hi all.

My son recently bought a 2005 Z4 3.0i with I believe an M54 engine which has since blown the head gasket & good old dad has been asked to fix it. Now my old Volvo I could do the head gasket in under an hour but I get the feeling its going to take me that long to find the first thing to take off.

My basic question is how viable is it without any special tools, what is the chance of the head resealing properly without a skim & what should I change in terms of water pump, chain tensioner etc whilst doing the job & roughly how long does it take?

Thanks in advance.

Very rare for them to fail on the engine. Make sure its not just cold weather mayo in the oil cap if thats why you think its failed.

If it has overheated, then the head bolts may have pulled out their threads. It may be easier just to get a second hand engine and do the clutch at the same time.
