M54 B30 starter failed, best place to buy?

Well after some funny slow starting or no starting on and off a few weeks back it's now finally stopped working altogether.

Battery good.

Earths good.

Power to starter good.

Alternator fine.

All headlights and lamps come on ok, headlights go off when I try cranking but there is no click or anything, just nothing.


RAC said starter motor too so I think I'll have to stump up for one.



Are BMW fairly reasonable on a starter motor?

Or am I best buying the part from them and DIY fitting?

Or am I best finding a starter elsewhere? Can you get good non-BMW units?


I'm easy to do the work as it's just a starter motor but if BMW are reasonable I might use them along with a few other jobs that need doing.


Any advice much appreciated :D

I've gone for a premium GSF item.

£162 - £60 on return of the old item = £102.


Looks like it's airbox/intake feed pipe off, and maybe a bit of the sound generator and then two bolts.

Just FYI reference, BMW wanted £225+vat for a Bosch and I'd get £45 back on the old one, so about £270 - £45, or £225 all in.

OK so I fitted it in about 1.5hrs steady away.

Not a bad job at all and it now cranks a lot better. Sharper and louder somehow vs the slurry subdued starting that the old one had got to. Not that I really noticed as it obviously gets that way over many years but it's much better now.

In the end the GSF Premium part was a Delco Remy/Bosch while the BMW was a Delphi.

The BMW one was a better quality one though, about 30mm shorter, better quality fittings and a bit lighter too.

But given the £100 overall cost vs £225 for a BMW one then I'm more than happy enough with it.
