M54 300k miles? It can be done.

M54 engined E85 at 275k miles. In Amurrca.
Anyone who thinks 100k miles is ‘high mileage’ is misinformed. Having had 280k miles out of an M52TU engine I know my own zed currently at 137k miles is nearing half it’s potential life expectancy.
I bought it at 100k miles over 2 years ago and barring a few minor niggles I now know that it’s going to the moon and back if I maintain it properly and don’t drive it like a tw@t!

My nephew has just destroyed the N55 engine in his M135i at 50k miles. He’s driven it like a tw@t but can’t appreciate and won’t accept that he’s contributed to the failure. He sees his mates revving the aris out of their cars and doing doughnuts in carparks and then does the same and can’t see how much damage that does to an engine over time. Fortunately for him he’s getting a new engine under warranty. Very lucky. But he’ll be back in the carparks and up to his old tricks soon enough when he gets it back.

My zed is for keeps afaiac and I’m looking forward to when it hits 300k miles.

The engines seem pretty much bullet proof. It's all the other bits that need replacing on the way. Gaskets, suspension parts etc.

Happy to say that the ///MR is thus far the most reliable car I have had the pleasure to own. :D :driving:

Wow that's some serious mileage! And testament to the longevity of these engines. Always got rid of my BMW's most being 6 cylinders at around 100k  bought the Z4 at 100k and was rather nervous in doing so but plan to keep it for the foreseeable, would be interested to know whats the most reliable of the 6 cylinders and what performance is lost at 150-200k + miles?

My Z4 2.5i is just over 218K miles and still runs and drives like new. It’s been well maintained and at this point feels like I could get another 200K out of it.

Mileage is a UK hang up in my opinion, I’ve been in many car all over the world and many of the car have done some really serious miles/kilometres. A couple that come to mind was a taxi in Germany that had over 900k kilometres on the clock on the same engine & in the USA I borrowed a colleagues Ford that had 500k miles on the clock.

Impressive stuff! But when I first owned cars 60k miles was the time to start worrying about an engine rebuild and 100k on an original engine was the preserve of legends like Volvo. Mind you not all mileage is equal, lots of cold starts, short runs and ragging in between is the engine killer i.e. UK urban driving. Perhaps we should follow aviation and shipping and calculate engine maintenance and longevity by hours?

As long as you do regular oil changes (and keep an eye on the cooling system), big miles are generally not a problem on a BMW 6 cylinder.

Rust killed my E36 325 - 155k. My dad is still running my old E36 328 Touring, gave it to him with about 214k. Runs great. Again it's the bodywork that's letting it down.

I’m of a similar mind set, however this would throw that theory out of the window.
