Hi all can someone please advise on the size of the removal tool needed for m54 3.0i or a link to one for sale, don't want to buy the wrong size.

Is this right?

Thanks in advanced

I'm pretty sure it's just a 27/32/36mm socket (can't remember exact size) as there a hex head built into the housing? If you have a look it's obvious.

Because it's made from plastic, and is quite easy to warp - so I've read - if the filter housing has been done up too tightly for example.

Exactly that

I've been using my trusty chain removal tool but it's a very tight fit and want to try the type like in my link just want to confirm it's the right size or if anyone has a link to one they've bought/used so I can buy.

I also don't understand what is being said here.... You just stick a socket on the housing right???

There’s an alternate method of using a tool that grips the flutes around the circumference instead

Not sure i have seen a removal tool that fits on the flutes of the M54 filter cap. I would have thought that the 36mm hex head would get in the way. The N52 filter cap doesnt have the hex and you need to use a removal tool that fits the flutes.
Surely if your doing your own oil changes then a 36mm socket would be fine as you wont be over tightening it when you put it back on.
The one in your link doesn't look the right one to me. With the cars listed as compatible to seems to be newer cars that will have the filter cap without the hex.

I just use a big adjustable spanner and never had an issue. It only takes 25nm (iirc) which isn't much at all - unless it's seized I suppose?

Either way, socket/spanner will do. Don't see the need for a specific tool.

In fairness, what things should be tightened to by garages and what they are tightened to seem to be wildly different depending on how unlucky you are.

On the other halfs fiesta I had to use an impact wrench to get the oil sump plug out, it should have been tightened to 35nm. My impact on full power has 200nm of torque and it still took 5 seconds of constant power to get it moving.

Wheel bolts are equally fun, and were a serious driver in my purchasing of my own impact tools. After hanging off a 3 foot breaker bar trying to get a wheel bolt off one time, I'm avoiding any further issues!
