M54/3.0i engine question

Not Z related but i have this engine in my X3 . can anyone help identify what the square shaped box is directly up from the red dipstick ?

Its started making a strange high pitched screech once the car is warmed up :?
 
DISA valve - get it replaced if the internal flap is loose!

Yup... Can get a full aluminium replacement kit on EBay. Watch a couple of YouTube videos & is very simple (just undo the upper of the two bolts underneath it ...

The car was heading to my indy on tuesday anyhow for a onceover & autobox oil change . guess now it will have another job on :oops:
Have googled it though & it tends to have a gravelly noise when faulty ? This is definitely a high pitched whine from the box but only when car is fully warmed up & has only started since the hot weather ?
 
X3 back today ,
Noise cured with new belt tensioner pulley along with auto box oil change & bluetooth passkey number from diagnostic machine :)
All's well again & another :thumbsup: for my indy chap Neil . £130 all done so can,t grumble at all :wink:
 
Might be worth checking the DISA anyway when you get a chance, just for piece of mind. But glad it's all sorted :thumbsup:
