M5 to Z4M

Hi all,

I currently run an E60 M5 which to be frank is brutal and brilliant. Having had it for just over a year I fancy a change and have been thinking about the Z4M as a possible replacement.

Has anybody made a similar move, I am worried that the z4m may feel a little underpowered (I know!). I am not worried about interior space etc but do want to use it as a daily driver.

Any thoughts appreciated.

edited to add - I am particularly after the couple not the roadster.

It's an odd swap, to be honest my next move will probably be from Z4MC to M5. They are obviously totally different cars, the M5 will be a lot more powerful and faster but I would suggest that the Z4M would be more fun and involving. But I haven't driven an M5 so am just speculating.

Hi

I haven't made a similar move, but I've had some fast cars, so can comment a bit

Most cars will feel slow compared to the M5 to be fair, but the Z4M coupe keeps up with some fairly quick cars when driven correctly. Think you'll only notice the lack of 500 BHP at over 100 mph tbh, depends how much you drive at 100+

Where the Z4m coupe scores over the M5 is feel and nimbleness, it's great on the track in standard form and much more involving to drive than the M5 and can be used every day, but is a bit firmer than the M5

Thanks for the notes, and yes it does sound a strange swap.

But consider for a moment the m5 - where on earth do you go next? I have toyed with a classic car but dont want to be stranded. Also thought about a 911 but just dont like the interior which feel dated.

The new XF-R or indeed RS6, well I am then replacing pretty much like with like.

So thought I might look at something very different, the Z4MC looks great in the right colour (for me that is Blue or Black) and I am hoping it will feel special enough to offset the obvious power deficit.

I've driven both and although the m5 is full of power and quite and experience, it's not as challenging and involving to drive. A good MC with the right set up will be quicker on the twisties, only losing a little on the straights. I understand your reasons for changing, i came from a 911 turbo which was soooo fast but not difficult to drive and not really an event to drive.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the MC and just how capable it is.

I'm sure you'd have lots of people here agreeing for a swap for a day or so... sounds like a good write up... :thumbsup:

I think you'd enjoy the change. My only experience with the E60 M5 is on the track at the BMW Performance Center and for all it's power, it's a bit lumbering. We drove the E90 M3, M6 and M5 and the M5 was my least favorite for the two days (didn't help that during my track session on the 2nd day it started overheating).

Thanks for all of the offers to swap :)

I have arranged an extended test drive over the weekend and am very interested to see what it is like. Will let you know my thoughts following the drive.

A good friend of mine has had an M5 and a Z4MC (and an M6 and just about every M3 Variant...) and I was talking with him the other day and he said if he could have just one car that would have to last him... he could'nt change it, he'd have the Z4MC everytime! he rates it as probably the best car he's ever driven!

Not the fastest, or best handling, or most 'practical' just the 'best' all round package & ownership experience.

I had the z4mc for the weekend and thought I would post some thoughts:

Immediate Thoughts

Positive;

- The car looked fantastic, the styling was great and improved the more I looked at it; from almost any angle the car is very handsome.
- The build quality and general feeling of sitting in the car was good.
- Sitting in the car the visibility was surprisingly good.
- Engine sounded good on start up and blipped nicely on the throttle.

Negatives;

- The interior felt a little cramped.
- It also felt a little dark and oppressive.

Driving Impression

Positive;

- Steering and brakes were great, very positive
- Engine note was good, not too intrusive but a good sound anyway

Negatives;

- I thought the gearing was a little odd - especially between 2nd and 3rd
- I know it will sound a bit daft but it felt like it could use more power, it just didnt have that instant and explosive acceleration that I was expecting

All in all, I enjoyed the car for the weekend but it just didnt grab me. Getting back in the m5 it felt quite big but after the first full throttle moment it felt right. So not the car for me, but I can see why it has a following
