M5 + MX-5 = Z4M ???

My current cars are an E39 M5 (2001, 40k miles, BMW warranty) and a Mazda MX-5 (1999, 50k miles).

Neither get driven a lot (my daily commute is by train, and much of our domestic mileage is done in my wife's Mini Cooper S), and I have been thinking of selling them both and just having one car.

The Z4M seems a reasonable option, giving the power of the M5 and the open top of the MX-5. I've also considered the Boxster (but too many of them about, and as a former 911 owner it feels like a step down), M3 Cabrio, Jaguar XKR and 996 or 997 Cabrio.

Is the Z4M the way to go? Anybody else been in the same/similar circumstances? If so, what did you buy?

Many thanks for any input.

Yes I think it makes perfect sense, why have two cars when you can have the best of both with one Z4MR...good luck with the search?

done the same sort of thing we both had our own cars bmw coupe for the wife z3 for me and my company car .new job meant company car for the wife as well .so the z3 went and the coupe wanted 3.0si zed but they are same price as an z4m roadster. :D so i went for the m and got one from a speclist dealer 5 k less the a main francise well pleased. :driving:

Makes sense if you really don't need 4 seats; if you do an M3 vert might be best? I had an E46 M3 vert, loved dropping the roof and the ride is so comfortable bearing in mind it's a proper performance car, but they just don't look special enough for me, hence going for the Z4MC :)

Done the 911 thing, now have a Z4 3.0i (not an M so take me with a pinch of salt...)...love the Zed, makes me feel as good as I did in the 911 and as an added bonus the whole world doesn't hate me anymore. But if you're talking new shape XKR....well, it would be a close run thing for me...

Still, you're gonna have some fun test drives!

Z4MR is a good choice, loads of drama, reasonable running costs for a sub 5 second hooligan that can also double as a comfortable cruiser with all of the toys. I had an MX5 mk 2 last year and enjoyed the car very much. It's good fun getting the most out of a car without the raw power of a BMW or Porsche.

i had an E39 M5 and i wished i had not sold it. I love my Z4M Coupe, it is quicker than the M5 to 60, 100 and 120....and far more wild to drive....but I wish i had kept the M5 since that version will be a hugely sought after model in another few years....
Dumb the mazda, park the M5 cover it and get a Z4M...not the roadster, not the 3.0 but the coupe.... :)
