M40i - PPF

My car has landed in the UK so delivery is not far off. How have existing owners found their cars have faired with regard to stone chips. Are there any areas of bodywork which are pretty susceptible. Has anyone gone down the PPF route whether partial or full (I know the pre LCI cars have a small area of factory fitted PPF towards the rear wheels but this isn't present on the LCI model). Appreciate anyone's experiences.

I’ve picked up quite a few chips on the front of mine, but NC500 and multiple forum runs were NOT helpful. I took out BMW paint protection plans so fixed ok.

On my next one at least the front will be PPF’d, already lined up with Byron

Are you literally going to do the whole front end.

So my theory on this is quite simple. Good quality ppf costs many many thousands. I’d rather pay for repairs or even a full bonnet spray at some point which would still be cheaper than ppf.

Although that’s on my blue, not sure about thunder night.

I had PPF on certain areas of my Cayman and it certainly did the job and wasn't astronomical. I appreciate the school of thought regarding repainting rather than protecting, however despite how good the bodyshop is there will inevitably be traces that areas have been repainted and personally that doesn't sit well with me. Each to their own of course.

Yes, I’ve had chips on both wings, bonnet and bumper. Byron does a “self healing” film that seems to be good

I also worry that every little knock will require not just paint, but new ppf which isn’t covered by insurance.
So when someone reversed into my car and it needed a new bumper and blending would have meant new ppf on the front of the car had I had it. Maybe as it wasn’t my fault I could have claimed that too, but had it of been my fault it would have been a new cost onto me.

It’s personal choice at the end of the day. My mate had his black Porsche full ppf in a satin finish and it looks amazing.

If your going down the frosted paint route, which is difficult to match, ppf would be the way to go but otherwise touch up paint is pretty good these days and a respray of a panel that is badly chipped must be cheaper?

I am going Thundernight. As mentioned I am not keen on painting panels.

Full ppf coverage on a new shape z4 would be around 5k id guess.... Ive replaced PPF for insurance companies more times than i can even count so it its covered unless you didn't declare it!

Also wear and tear PPF pieces can be cost effective , this one cost around 600 quid i think if i remember correctly...

Best thing about this era is the patterns are brilliant now so you will really get a nice seamless install, my old z4m was complete bulk install, Zero patterns or what was available was terrible fitment as it was the start of the software era. So my personal install is very much hand made ( literally hand cut on the car which is incredibly difficult) far from perfect but neat, ill keep perfecting it as pieces need replacement but its doing its job and keeping my car is good order!

any advice needed from someone that does this day in day, im here fellas!

The company that did my Porsche has quoted £3k for the ID3 (complete minus roof) so think that is a fair price for the protection.

Front is the obvious answer. However, I would say if you decide to go down the ppf route, apply it to the whole car. For whatever reason, I even have stone chip on my rear wheel arch and boot lid.
Based on the quote I got when I took delivery of my car, the price of full car ppf is about 1/3-1/2 more than front only. Since it's already quite expensive even for front only ppf, I don't mind spend the extra to have full protection if I decide to spend the money. But obviously, I end up decided not to spend the money at all on ppf

The stone chip cost of respray on my Porsche was £10k (after the NC500 run - never again).

The PPF was a no brainer after that, I have not had a stone chip since.

I’d say 2 NC500 runs are probably responsible for 80%+ of mine, but it was a blast

Ive had my M40i for about 12 months now, and in that time it has picked up a couple of small chips to the front end..
When i got it it had been repainted at the front due to stone chips, by the local dealer, and a great match it was, as its Frozen Orange..

In the meantime i have enquired about PPF-ing the car, and got a quote of £1800 to do, the full front ie to the back of the front wings, bonnet, front bumper, headlights, down the side skirts and around the bottom of the back bumper. And the mirrors. This was in Xpel ppf matt coating.

Is this a decent price as ive never dealt with ppf before.
