M40i brakes - design flaw uncovered

Bmw Emergency Services every time it happens!

Yes ronk, that will always be my first option but it depends on how much of a hurry I am in and whether or not I can wait a while for the BMW Emergency Services to arrive.

Well, I have just been out in my car for the first time in three weeks as I've been away on holiday. Sadly, I have to report that yet another stone got trapped in the front nearside brakes. I pulled away from traffic lights and heard the screaming noise and, of course, knew right away what it was. Could not stop as I was in a line of traffic but the stone came out after about half a mile of driving.

Reported this yet again, 5th time, to my dealer by email. At some point you would expect that they need to do something about this. However, I fear that they will turn a deaf ear to the problem, but I will keep at them. Not a very good advert for BMW. :headbang:

This photo of the front M Sport brake assembly clearly shows what the problem is. The wide open top is a magnet for catching stones and the bottom of the shield bends in towards the disc closing the gap and trapping the stone. The bottom of the shield can't be bent outwards because of the track rod end which is right up against the shield. :headbang:

How did that even pass the conception stage. Not fit for purpose at all.

Give BMW some grief - the dealership seems to be fobbing you off!

Believe me ronk, I have been giving them plenty of grief. It appears that the dealer does not have much clout as I am hearing that he gets his fingers rapped by BMW if he doesn't follow the BMW party line. Bad show by all concerned. :headbang:

Call me a numpty but why wouldn't you either bend the guards away at the bottom to let stones out or fit guards off a 140i / 240i or other similar model not using this style of disc cover :? the whole experience would have pushed me over the edge by now .
Its perfectly obvious the dealer couldn't care less so sort it yourself & enjoy the car

Id be taking the car back absolutely outrageous Id also be all over their social media, facebook, twitter etc, reach out to influences on the likes of youtube etc get them to cover it and finally the good ol BBC Watchdog

Exposure is everything

Or sort it yourself pretty easily & get on with your life  its 6 weeks , countless dealer visits & uncountable hours of anguish .
When the penny drops that most dealerships ( of any marque) really don't give a s**t once the ££ is handed over surely for own sanity & enjoyment you would cut to the easiest solution for yourself  fettle it & get on with owning it

I can’t imagine it’s that difficult to rivet on a shaped piece of alloy/tin to shield the top section of the disc-problem solved and plenty of satisfaction from effecting a fix when Bmw couldn’t be bothered. That’s what I’d be doing

This is vaguely similar to a problem my wife had on her (almost) new Audi TT a couple of years ago.

Find out the name and email of BMW's head guy in UK (not difficult, Google's your friend) and let him have chapter and verse of your problem. Drop in a few veiled suggestions of contacting the motoring press, TV etc, sit back and wait for the phone call.

Worked for us, the guy was all over it like a rash, problem solved very quickly after we had been constantly fobbed off by the main Audi dealer.

I certainly wouldn't start f*cking about bashing the hardware on a £50k motor.

It’s only a dust shield, not exactly like dismantling the engine etc!

Do it NOW Jim!!!

It will catch his attention first thing tomorrow morning.

Follow it up with a phone call if you haven't heard anything back by lunchtime!

There doesnt seem to be many owners on here reporting the same thing.
Maybe this isnt a common problem at all and you are just unlucky with the roads you are driving on being littered with stones.
Is it happening around the same areas?

While I can totally understand the perspective Andy (and agree to an extent lol) if I had just signed myself to a brand new £50k motor I would expect absolute perfection. The service Jim has had is appalling

I like Dr_Johns idea

Also I wonder what the guards on the Supra are like? Wonder if they are just the same or if there are differences, could be an easy swap job if they are different (although Id expect not)

Thats a good point, maybe worth doing a wee poll?

"Do you have a new Z4 M40i?" = Y/N
"Have you had stones trapped in the brake assembly?" = Y/N
